If horse racing is the sport of kings, then Saratoga racetrack is the court and the 148th Travers Stakes is the throne. The field for the Travers is limited to three-year-olds, colts and geldings carrying 126 pounds (57 kg) and fillies carrying 123 pounds (56 kg).
As well, the enhanced Travers Day card highlights the 2017 Saratoga stakes schedule that will include 69 stakes worth a record $18.7 million.
The Travers will be run on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017 as the 11th race on a 13-race card at Saratoga Race Course. Post time for the race is 5:44 p.m., and the race will be part of a 90-minute broadcast on NBC that begins at 4:30 pm.
Dating back to 1864, the Travers always has been a race that sets the blood to flowing, whether you're a fan whose favorite horse is running; an owner or trainer, who's entered your prize horse or a handicapper whose reputation hangs on the line.
Nicknamed Saratoga's Midsummer Derby, it is a Grade 1, $1,250,000 race for 3-year-olds, traditionally held on the last Saturday in August each year and ran over a distance at 1 ¼ miles, though it was held at several different distances early in its history.
The winner also, receives a Tiffany designed trophy called the Man O' War Cup, in honor of 1920 Travers winner Man O' War. The permanent trophy remains in possession of the track while the annual winners receive a gold replica to keep.
Saturday’s Travers Stakes could be the best horse race of the year, as all three winners of this year’s Triple Crown races are in the field. It will be the first time since 1982 that all three winners of the spring classics have met in the Travers. Belmont Stakes winner Tapwrit is the morning line favorite at odds of 7/2, but the other two, Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming, and Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing are the fourth and fifth choices in the betting odds. Founded in 1895, the Travers Stakes is the oldest Thoroughbred race still in existence. Originally only a mile in length, the distance has varied over the years with modern races standing at a full 1 ¾ miles. This distance is one of the reasons that only the best bred and trained horses dare to dream of the victory circle.
Reserved for the best 3-year-old colts, geldings and fillies, the winner is awarded the Man O War cup, named for what many believe to be the greatest horse to ever race. The original cup was donated to the race by the Riddle family, owner of the mighty Man O War. A gold-plated replica is presented to the winner every year, by a member of the Riddle family.
In addition to the cup, the wooden canoe that floats in the Saratoga pond wears the winner’s colors for an entire year.
The Travers Canoe has been a lovely tribute to the winners of the Travers, every year since 1961. Every year, the canoe is painted in the colors of the silks of reigning Travers winner. A canoe has been a fixture in the infield pond since 1926, but it wasn't until 1961 that the canoe became affiliated with the Travers.
