With March Madness kicking off this week, the NBA will take a backseat to the hoopla with a minimal national broadcast schedule. For those hoops fans that prefer the professional game, the league’s own network will carry some intriguing matchups as the playoff races in both conferences tighten up.
The NBA on ESPN will serve up doubleheaders on Monday and Wednesday with two of the hottest teams featured on the first night. A key in-state rivalry matchup between Southwest Division foes gets things started on Monday when the Rockets, winners in 18 of their last 19 games, host San Antonio. It’s been nearly two decades since the Spurs last missed the playoff and they are hanging on by a thread in the packed Western Conference picture.
Meanwhile, James Harden and the Rockets just keep winning. Their 17-game winning streak ended in Toronto last week, but the Rockets started a new streak and go for their third straight win over the Spurs this season. The other blazing hot club in the West is, appropriately enough, the Portland Trail Blazers, who now own the NBA’s longest current winning streak at nine games. They’ll host the Miami Heat.
The only matchup between two Eastern Conference teams should be a dandy when the Celtics host the Wizards on the NBA on ESPN Wednesday. The Wiz lost four games on the parquet floor in last season’s East semifinal and they’re going for their second straight victory at the Garden this season while trying to track down the Cavs for a top-4 seed. The Lakers are making a push to enter the postseason picture and could cause havoc if they’re able to end a six-game losing skid to the Warriors in the nightcap.
The Rockets and Warriors are on a collision course in the West, but the race for the postseason is as exciting as we’ve seen in recent seasons. NBATV will have a number of games featuring those playoff hopefuls with the Timberwolves-Spurs matchup highlighting Saturday’s schedule.
Spurs at Rockets / ATS Free Pick
Preview: It’s been two decades since the San Antonio Spurs failed to reach the postseason, but the way they’re playing now has put that remarkable run of success is in serious jeopardy. It didn’t start out this way for them, however. Coming off 61 wins and a run to the Western Conference final, the Spurs were thought to be a contender. Injuries have ravaged the club with Kawhi Leonard playing only nine games this season. There is a chance he can return, but he’s not going to make it for the tilt with the Houston Rockets on Monday. Continue...
Heat at Trail Blazers / ATS Free Pick
Preview: The Portland Trail Blazers aren’t going to catch the Warriors or Rockets in the Western Conference, so the next best thing is to maintain their standing as the third-best team. On the strength of an eight-game winning streak, the Blazers vaulted over several teams to reach their current spot for now. But in the crowded playoff race, positioning can change quickly. Beating teams from the Southwest Division is nothing new for the Blazers, who knocked off the Miami Heat earlier this season. Continue...
Timberwolves at Wizards / ATS Free Pick
Preview: Riding a three-game losing streak for the first time this season and facing the defending champion Warriors, the Minnesota Timberwolves were desperate for a victory. It helped that the Dubs were minus Steph Curry and a few key reserves, but the Wolves were able to end their slide and keep pace in the congested Western Conference playoff race. A difficult stretch of games continues Tuesday when the Washington Wizards stand in the way. Continue...
Wizards at Celtics / ATS Free Pick
Preview: The Washington Wizards are one of six teams tightly bunched together in the Eastern Conference playoff race and they are entertaining thoughts of getting as high as No. 3. That’s a possibility with only one game separating them from the Indiana Pacers. But that’s as high as it gets with the Boston Celtics firmly locked into the No. 2 slot. The Wiz can make a case for a higher seed by knocking off the injury-ravaged Celtics on the parquet floor Wednesday night. Continue...
Lakers at Warriors / ATS Free Pick
Preview: The Golden State Warriors return home after losing consecutive games for only the second time this season. The Dubs have yet to lose three in a row and they also get to face a Los Angeles Lakers team they’ve beaten six straight times. One streak is going to continue when the California rivals square off. We’re not sure about the status of Steph Curry and the Dubs sure could use the former MVP in the lineup after the offense sputtered without him. Continue...
Clippers at Rockets / ATS Free Pick
Preview: The Houston Rockets are making winning basketball games look easy. And as a result, they own the league’s best record. The Rockets won 14 straight games earlier this season and they recently had a 17-gamer end. But they’ve responded with a pair of victories after that loss to Toronto and need to keep winning to fend off the Warriors. Houston worked out some of its frustration with the Los Angeles Clippers last game, beating them for the first time this season. Continue...
Clippers at Thunder / ATS Free Pick
Preview: While the Los Angeles Clippers will be playing their second game in as many nights, the Oklahoma City Thunder are at home resting after winning four straight games to move into the fourth spot in the Western Conference playoff race. With the postseason still several weeks away, both teams are tightly-packed and every game counts. And the Clips are at the outset of a stretch that has them playing their next seven games against teams currently situated in the playoffs. Continue...
Timberwolves at Spurs / ATS Free Pick
Preview: The turbulent Western Conference playoff race is about to get a little more chaotic when two teams in the middle of the hunt square off. Both teams are riding mild winning streaks heading into the confrontation and one will have its dreams of playing in the second season take a hit. The San Antonio Spurs have been a part of the postseason party in each of the last 20 seasons. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to end the NBA’s longest current postseason drought. Continue...
Rockets at Timberwolves / ATS Free Pick
A key factor when handicapping the NBA is doing research about the teams, player and match-ups. When you are making a bet on the NBA look at how the teams are playing, what situation they are in, how they do head to head, and their home and away records.
A couple of more things to think about when betting on the NBA.
Injuries, key players missing can be huge, whether the team is traveling or at home, fan bases (public teams) and where a team is positioned in the standings, when making your NBA bet.
If Stephen Curry is not playing for the Golden State Warriors then it affects the betting line and really makes it hard to bet on the Warriors.
It is usually an effective approach to make out your own basketball lines for the games and compare those to other published lines. Continue
Though there's no doubt that the Cavaliers and Warriors are amongst the best teams in the NBA, that doesn't mean that they're cashing in for their bettors. We've had a couple really special teams who have been killing it for ATS purposes this year, and there's enough time left on the docket to get in on their games to cash in big time. More
