When: December 28, 2017 - 1:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Where: Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium
Who: Virginia Cavaliers vs Navy Midshipmen
Virginia isn't going to be scared about going on the road to Navy for a bowl game. The Military Bowl is being played close enough to home for the fans to easily travel from Charlottesville to Annapolis by car, and there should be a decent contingent there.
Besides, Bronco Mendenhall's team put up with far more when it went to Boise State early in the season and upset the Broncos on the Smurf Turf.
UVA flamed out a bit after starting at 5-1, but the schedule got significantly harder from there. In fact, the only thing that ultimately got this club into a bowl game was an upset win over Georgia Tech. Aside from that, each of the last five games of the year were lost by double-digits, including an embarrassing 10-0 defeat at the hands of Virginia Tech.
Navy was ranked as late as the middle of October after starting off at 5-0, but Zach Abey's constant nagging injuries and a tough schedule in the AAC really did the Midshipmen in.
Navy still has its six wins before the Army/Navy Game is played, but losses to Memphis, UCF, Temple, Notre Dame and Houston were all just a bit out of reach. The Middies are close; they didn't lose a single game by more than 10 points all year long. But this is still a tough task to take down a middling ACC team, even at home.
Navy's run of three straight bowl wins came to a close at last year's Armed Forces Bowl.
Virginia has only played in two bowl games since its last win at the 2005 Music City Bowl. This is the team's first appearance in any bowl game since losing the Chick-fil-A Bowl in 2011.
Opening Line: Navy -3.5
Preview: It is rare in a bowl game where a team has a true home field advantage, but that will be the case in the Military Bowl on Thursday, December 28 on ESPN, as the Navy Midshipmen host the Virginia Cavaliers. This game will be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. While Navy will have the home field edge, Virginia will have some crowd support, as Charlottesville, Virginia is just a couple hours away. Oddsmakers have made this game a pick, with a total of 55.
