Why: WBC & WBA Super Light Welterweight titles
Where: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York, United States
When: October 21, 2012
Danny “Swift” Garcia (24-0, 15KOs) will defend his unified WBA/WBC junior welterweight titles for the first time against former four division beltholder Erik Morales set for October 20, 2012 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Garcia defeated Morales last March by a 12 round unanimous decision. The two will headline a Showtime-televised fight card called "Brooklyn Pride."
Also, a stacked undercard with several fighters from the New York City area, including WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (31-4, 7 KOs), middleweight contenders Peter Quillin (27-0, 20 KOs) and Danny Jacobs (22-1, 19 KOs), welterweight contender Dmitriy Salita (33-1-1, 17 KOs), and junior welterweight prospect Eddie Gomez (9-0, 6 KOs) of the Bronx.
In their previous boxing match, Morales lost by 12-round unanimous decision to Garcia in a vacant WBC light welterweight title fight on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas. The fight was dominated by Garcia, with the exception of a broken nose that he suffered from getting hit by one too many jabs from Morales. Garcia’s power and work rate was too much for Morales, who was only able to fight in brief spurts. Morales lost the WBC light welterweight title on the scales coming in 2 lbs overweight. Morales was down in round eleven by left hook but beat the count and managed to the survive the round yet appeared to run out of gas in round twelve. Scores were 109-118, 110-117 and 112-116.
At 36 years, Erik Morales (52-8, 36 KO) has done it all over the years, great rivalries with Marco Antonio Barrera and Manny Pacquiao, titles at 122, 126, 130, and 140 pounds, numerous Fight of the Year-type wars.
Morales, who had a rematch clause from the first meeting with Garica, feels confident of winning the rematch. After Garcia captured the title from Morales, the Mexican veteran quickly requested an immediate rematch with Garcia. However, he allowed Garcia to move forward with a unification with Khan, and now Morales wants the opportunity to get revenge. This will be Morales first time back in the ring since losing to Garcia.
As for Garcia, he has a lot of momentum on his side due to his first title defnce on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay and shockingly stopped heavily favored Amir Khan in four rounds. Garcia fought Khan on short notice after the British fighter's bout against Lamont Peterson was wiped out when the American tested positive for abnormally high levels of testosterone. Garcia will be more motivated than ever to get through this fight and move on to bigger paydays, all the advantage lays with the man from Philladelphia after proving many critics wrong and destroying Khan early on, leaving no doubt in peoples minds that he is one to watch.
If Garcia gets past Morales, he needs to turn his attention to Khan so that he can put the final nail in his career. Garcia just needs to finish him off and then move on to bigger and better fights like Alvarado, the Matthysse-Olusegun winner, and Peterson. Those guys are all waiting for Garcia, and they promise to be interesting fights for boxing fans.
