While the Patriots have had longer-running feuds with other teams, over the better part of the last decade, no rivalry defined the NFL better than Patriots and Colts. The Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots don’t play in the same division, but nonetheless have one of the most heated rivalries in the NFL. These two programs were for many years the class of the AFC, as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning constantly battled to make the Super Bowl.
The Patriots lead the all-time series by a margin of 51-29. The teams have met in the five times and New England has won four of them. Those postseason victories are why New England has the upper hand in this rivalry. The Colts were often dominant during the regular season but had trouble getting past Brady, Bill Belichick and the Patriots on a regular basis. Indy did get one Super Bowl during the rivalry but for the most part New England was the top dog.
The Patriots have won seven straight games in this rivalry as they remain the best club in the AFC while the Colts have fallen off a bit since Manning left.
These two teams won’t meet in the regular season, but it’s possible they see each other in the playoffs. The Patriots are the defending Super Bowl champions and are expected to be one of the best teams in the NFL once again.
Brady is getting old but he continues to play at an unbelievably high level. New England will once again try to claim the top seed in the AFC heading into the playoffs. The Colts’ future is less certain. Andrew Luck is a star quarterback but the defense is suspect and there isn’t a ton of talent around him.
The AFC South doesn’t have a dominant team so the Colts could make a run at the playoffs. If they do, it will be interesting to see if they renew their rivalry with New England once again.
