The Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint purse is one million dollars and the race is open to horses three-years-old and up.
The "win and you're in" qualifiers for the Turf Sprint are the Arlington Sprint Handicap, Prix Maurice de Gheest, Manikato Stakes, Morvich Handicap and Nearctic Stakes.
The 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, will return to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th, 2016 and kicks off with a series of "Win and You're In" Challenge races that lead up to the World Championships.
Every year, the Breeders' Cup Championship continues to grow in popularity because of its prestige and keen level of competition.
The Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint has only been run eight times in the past, and this is one of these events that's still really getting its footing internationally. However, the list of pre-entries for this race stood at 28 horses, more than in any of the other races of the Breeders' Cup, and half of those hopefuls will be left on the sidelines while the rest try to get their share of this $1 million purse on Saturday.
Chautauqua ( Darley T.J. Smith Stakes )
Mecca's Angel ( Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes )
Ardhoomey ( Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes )
Red Falx ( Sprinters Stakes )
Even though there are four automatic qualifiers for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, none of the four are coming to Santa Anita. At some point, this race will surely add an American and/or Canadian element to the "Win and You're In" races, but with no notables winning these overseas races, it was clear that all four were going to ultimately stay at home and watch this one from their respective countries.

There's just not a lot of notable horses in this field in spite of its size, and it's a little surprising that a purse this large isn't attracting more in the way of top notch thoroughbreds. Of the 28 horses who were possible to enter the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, just four have earned over $1 million in their careers. Of course, someone is going to be adding their name to that list on Saturday if one of those four don't ultimately hit the line first.
All eyes are going to be on Celestine. He's the highest rated horse in this field per Prime Power, though he isn't the favorite in spite of a relatively good 8 to 1 price.
Celestine is certainly more of a sprinter, as he's used to running at just one mile. He has hit the board in all four of her races this year, though interestingly enough, he hasn't been favored in any of the bunch. That could be bad news for him in this one even though she's going to be amongst the favorites should she run here.
The two favorites are on the inside for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, as Pure Sensation breaks from the No. 1 post at 5 to 1, while Irish-bred Obviously is the second choice at 6 to 1. Interestingly enough, in spite of the depth of this field, there isn't a horse in the bunch with a higher morning line than 20 to 1, that being No. 6 Calgary Cat.
