Turf racing is bigger virtually everywhere else in the world than it is in the United States. Yet it's here on American soil that the biggest turf race of them all is held. The Breeders' Cup Turf race is worth a prize pool of $4 million, the biggest of its kind in grass racing. Outside of the Breeders' Cup Classic, this is the biggest and most notable race of the bunch at the world championships. This race brings out more international thoroughbreds than any of the other races at the Breeders' Cup.
What makes the Breeders' Cup so great is the fact that it's a collection of horses, not just from the United States, but from all around the world as well. Here at the Breeders' Cup Longines Turf, we've got a tremendous collection of horses from the United States, Canada and all over the UK. It's a long race at 1 1/2 miles, and that's part of the reason why there are so many who come from the turf-rich UK to run.
The Breeders' Cup World Championships are held at a different track each year with the exception of it being run back to back years at Churchill Downs and once at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada.
The 35th running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, will have a total of 14 races spread out over two days at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday, November 2, and Saturday, 3, 2018 and kicks off with a series of "Win and You're In" Challenge races that lead up to the World Championships.
Trainer Aidan O'Brien has a record six wins at the Breeders' Cup Turf in his career, and he's going to look to make it three straight titles in this race with Highland Reel. The winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Turf race has already run in seven countries in his career, and he's had success at the highest level wherever he has run.
Of the 10 horses who have earned automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Turf race, four are set to run. Beach Patrol won both the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic and the Arlington Million and is going to be the top pick amongst American ponies to win this race.
The favorite, though, is going to be Ulysses. This Michael Stoute-trained colt has crushed his competition in Europe this year, including winning a pair of Grade 1 races on the other side of the pond. If he can beat out Highland Reel, he'll take the title as the best turfer in the world.

It's not often that you can say a race in the United States is going to be battled out between two Brits, but there's a really good chance that's what's going to happen on Saturday at the Breeders' Cup Turf.
Highland Reel, the defending champion of this race, has built a pretty fierce rivalry with Ulysses over on the other side of the pond, and now, both are coming to America to fight it out in the Breeders' Cup Turf for the second straight year. Ulysses had a bad run last year in this race, but if he gets a better ride this time around, he's probably the horse to beat.
Still, knocking off the champs is going to be really tough, just as it's going to be hard to see off Beach Patrol if he runs as well as he did in his last race at a mile and a half. This is a colt who just wants to run all day long. The longer the race, the better, and with this being the longest race in the Breeders' Cup, it should suit him well.
These three favorites are all lined between 7 to 2 and 5 to 1, and any of the three could go off as the favorite or the third choice just as easily.
Beyond these, the only other horse that seemingly has a good shot at capturing a victory is Oscar Performance. He's had some stunning showings on the turf in his career when he's been able to get out to the lead and run with nothing but grass in front of him. It'll be tougher to do that at the Breeders' Cup Turf thanks to a far outside post with some speed two slots to his inside with Beach Patrol, but jockey Jose Ortiz could prove to be a great equalizer with his familiarity with Del Mar.
