The $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf is for 3 year old horse and is the most international of all of the races, a 1 ½ mile turf marathon that regularly draws the top turf runners worldwide to the U.S.
The Breeders' Cup World Championships are held at a different track each year with the exception of it being run back to back years at Churchill Downs and once at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada.
The 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, will return to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th, 2016 and kicks off with a series of "Win and You're In" Challenge races that lead up to the World Championships.
Every year, the Breeders' Cup Championship continues to grow in popularity because of its prestige and keen level of competition.
What makes the Breeders' Cup so great is the fact that it's a collection of horses, not just from the United States, but from all around the world as well. Here at the Breeders' Cup Longines Turf, we've got a tremendous collection of horses from the United States, Canada and all over the UK. It's a long race at 1 1/2 miles, and that's part of the reason why there are so many who come from the turf-rich UK to run here at Santa Anita.
Don Inc ( Gran Premio 25 de May )
My Cherie Amour ( Grande Premio Basil )
Marialite ( Takarazuka Kinen )
Highland Reel ( King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes )
Mondialiste ( Arlington Million )
Postponed ( Juddmonte International )
Ashleyluvssugar ( Del Mar Handicap )
Flintshire ( Sword Dancer Invitational )
Iquitos ( Grosser Preis von Baden )
Almanzor ( Irish Champion Stakes )
Ectot ( Joe Hirsch Turf Classic )
Even though there are a healthy 11 "Win and You're In" races for the Breeders' Cup Longines Turf, only a total of five spots are going to be taken in this field by horses who automatically qualified. Four of the five auto qualifiers are coming in from the UK, Ectot and Flintshire from Great Britain and Highland Reel and Mondialiste from Ireland.
Ashleyluvssugar won the Del Mar Handicap to qualify for the Breeders' Cup Longines Turf.
It's not surprising that the first three qualifiers, Don Inc, My Cherie Amour and Marialite aren't bothering coming to the United States since they're coming from races run in both South America and in Asia, and their premier victories came back in May and June.

Ireland and the UK love their grass racing, so it shouldn't be surprising that a whopping six of the 13 who have been signed up for this race are coming from overseas. That, of course, makes it really hard to handicap, not knowing what most of these horses can do against any of the top American racers.
What we do know though, is that all of these horses have won at least once again some of the others in this field. Highland Reel ( 3/1 ) beat out Erupt and others in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Found ( 3/1 ) took out Highland Reel in a race in France just a few weeks ago. Notice the commonalities in the prices of all of the horses we just listed? They're both the co-second favorites at 3 to 1.
But the favorite is Flintshire at 5/2, as this is largely considered one of the best turf racers, especially at distance, in the world.
Keep an eye on Ashleyluvssugar, too. She's 15 to 1 and has won eight of her 17 career races, including winning each of her last two races here in California. She's beaten out Metaboss ( 30/1 ) and Texas Ryano ( 30/1 ), other contenders in the Breeders' Cup Longines Turf several times in the past, and that's definitely a good sign for her in her first Breeders' Cup race at five years old.
