The Breeders' Cup Mile consist of the world’s best grass thoroughbreds, as they race around two turns of the Santa Anita turf course for horses 3-years-old and older, and will have a purse of $2 million.
Challenge races to qualfiy for the Breeders' Cup World Championships Mile are the Champions Mile, Woodbine Mile, Del Mar Breeders' Cup Mile, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, Oak Tree Mile Stakes and Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes.
The Breeders Cup Mile has been dominated in recent years by Goldikova who won the race in 2008, 2009 and 2010 until finally being defeated by Court Vision in 2011.
Now that Goldikova's dominance has come to an end it's anyone's race to win in the Breeders Cup Mile.
The 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, will return to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th, 2016 and kicks off with a series of "Win and You're In" Challenge races that lead up to the World Championships.
Every year, the Breeders' Cup Championship continues to grow in popularity because of its prestige and keen level of competition.
The Breeders' Cup generally isn't a spot where the fillies and mares run up against the colts, but every now and again, you see a couple special horses who decide they want to give it a shot versus the big boys. Here in the Breeders' Cup Mile, there are actually a few different fillies who are giving it a shot in a race that was historically dominated by the boys.
Legal Eagle ( L'Ormarins Queen's Plate )
Winx ( Doncaster Mile Handicap )
Kitcat ( Gran Premio Club Hipico Falabella )
Midnight Storm ( Shoemaker Mile )
Logotype ( Yasuda Kinen )
The Gurkha ( Sussex Stakes )
Ribchester ( Prix Jacques Le Marois )
Tepin ( Woodbine Mile )
Miss Temple City ( Shadwell Turf Mile )
Nine different horses qualified automatically for the Breeders' Cup Mile, but only four of the nine are going to be making the trip to Santa Anita. It's not surprising with so many of the races ultimately coming early in the year and overseas, it's hard to imagine any of the winners of the really early races coming to the Breeders' Cup.
That said, Kitcat won third of the "Win and You're In" jaunts at the Gran Premio Club Hipico Falabella in Chile in May, and he's going to be running in one of the other Breeders' Cup races.
Midnight Storm ( 12/1 ), the winner of the Shoemaker Mile, Eddie Read Handicap and Del Mar Handicap, is certainly running hot heading into the Breeders' Cup Mile, and he's going to be one of the top dogs to watch out for.
Miss Temple City ( 12/1 ) won the only has five wins in her career, and she's rarely been the favorite in her races, but she did win the Shadwell Turf Mile to qualify for the Breeders' Cup Mile.
All eyes though, are going to be on Tepin, the winner of this very same race last year. She's 3 to 1 to win the Breeders' Cup Mile in spite of the fact that it took a while for her to qualify for the Breeders' Cup Mile. She would have been in the race one way or the other in all likelihood, snaring that win at the Woodbine Mile was the last straw to get her in this field.

Even though there were almost 30 pre-entries into the Breeders' Cup Mile, only the field of 14 has been chosen for this race. There are a lot of horses who hoped to run in some of the other Breeders' Cup races and were ultimately be available to do so, while others made decisions to run strictly against the boys or the girls. This field will be big for sure at the maximum of 14, and that makes it tough to handicap without any idea of who's really running.
But it's certainly worth remembering that there might not be any horse out there that can beat Tepin. She's got 13 wins in her 22 races, and she has over $4 million in career earnings. Sure, she was beaten by Photo Call ( 15/1 ), an Irish horse getting ready to run in the Breeders' Cup Mile as well, but losing in the First Lady Stakes isn't the end of the world, especially with such a good track record, including winning this race last year.
