The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf G1, is an American Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-old horses, run at 1 mile on the grass course, with a purse of $500,000, is often a forecast for the top turf horses of the future.

The 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, will return to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th, 2016 and kicks off with a series of "Win and You're In" Challenge races that lead up to the World Championships.

Every year, the Breeders' Cup Championship continues to grow in popularity because of its prestige and keen level of competition.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at a Glance

It's always tricky trying to figure out how to handicap two-year old horses, and that problem is magnified even more when you're talking about measuring colts who have never run up against any other legitimate chances, and in some cases, horses who have never even been in the United States. The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is arguably the test of all tests for handicappers for sure.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Automatic Qualifiers

Landfall ( Willis Champions Juvenile Stakes )

Good Samaritan ( Summer Stakes )

Best of Days ( Royal Lodge Stakes )

Keep Quiet ( Bourbon Stakes )

National Defense ( Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere )

The only one of the five races that act as qualifiers for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is run in the United States, that being the Bourbon Stakes. Interestingly enough, it was a French horse, Keep Quiet who ultimately qualified by winning that race.

Of course, the fact that virtually all of these races are overseas does provide a challenge. On one hand, this really is the opportunity of a lifetime for some of these trainers, breeders and owners to have a horse come to the United States and run for one of the biggest prizes in the sport. But on the other hand, these are all young and impressionable horses, and bringing them to the United States is a huge hassle.

That's why the only one who ran in an international race to win and qualify for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf who is really coming is Good Samaritan, who won the Summer Stakes in Canada. Ironically, Good Samaritan is an American-bred colt, but of course, there's a big difference between coming in from Canada and shipping from halfway around the world. You can see that in the odds here with Good Samaritan being lined as a 9/2 choice, the second favorite on the board behind Oscar Performance at 4 to 1.

No one in this field has run more than four races outside of Intelligence Cross ( one of the favorites at 6 to 1 ), and that really has handicappers relying a lot more on training than actually races because anything could happen on a race-by-race basis.

Outside of the two automatic qualifiers who are going to be running in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, there are a lot of respectable horses. That said, there isn't a single horse in this field who is still undefeated with more than one race won, and there are a few possibilities here who still haven't won a race yet, too.

If we had to pick one horse to watch out for, it'd be Wellabled, even at a big price of 15 to 1. He's hit the board in each of his races in his career, winning three of the four. He hasn't run in anything better than a Grade 3 race, that being the Arlington-Washington Futurity, but he's been good wherever he's gone.

Good Samaritan and Oscar Performance are the two top contenders per Prime Power, but there isn't a heck of a lot separating any of the horses who are going to run in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
