The road to the Kentucky Derby has already started for fans of the Triple Crown, and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile is merely the next step in line for the top two-year old ponies in the world. There's never a guarantee that the two-year old champ goes on to even reach the Kentucky Derby field, let alone win the race. Regardless, the winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile almost always opens up the new year as the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby.
Breeder's Cup Juvenile is a 1 1/16 mile race, restricted to male 2 year-olds, that hope to make their mark in the Breeders' Cup World Championships and the $2 million purse, makes it the richest 2-year-old race in North America.
The 34th running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, will have a total of 14 races spread out over two days at Del Mar Racetrack, in San Diego, California on Friday, November 3, and Saturday, 4th, 2017 and kicks off with a series of "Win and You're In" Challenge races that lead up to the World Championships.
Every year, the Breeders' Cup Championship continues to grow in popularity because of its prestige and keen level of competition.
This year's field in the Juvenile is shaping up to be relatively small, a fact that is a bit of a shock considering the fact that this is the biggest prize a two-year old is eligible to race for at $2 million. Bolt d'Oro, the horse who is currently the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby at 10 to 1, is the Breeders' Cup Juvenile favorite at 7 to 5 at the moment. He won the "Win and You're In" FrontRunner Stakes by a wide margin to easily establish himself as the top two-year old in the world.
That said, there are three other automatic qualifiers in this field as well. Firenze Fire won the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park in his last run, while The Tabulator was an upset winner at the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs. The favorite of the three secondary automatic qualifiers is Free Drop Billy, the winner of the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland Park.

You don't need to be a horse racing expert to know that there's a clear "have" and clear "have nots" in this field. The only question is whether there is anyone who can rise up and challenge Bolt d'Oro, a horse who has effectively been perfect in the early portions of his career.
At some point, Bolt d'Oro is sure to be beaten, and it's better than 50/50 that it'll be at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Still, he's turned a 105 Beyer Speed Rating already in his career and has won here on the dirt at Del Mar twice before. You'll find massive flaws in the rest of this field outside of perhaps the 3-for-3 The Tabulator.
The Tabulator just doesn't look like he's in the right field here. We're going to find out if he was badly undervalued out of the blocks or not, but he only has one graded stakes race run, that coming at the Iroquois Stakes. This is a huge jump in class, and to run into Bolt d'Oro for a first race is going to be one tremendous challenge.
Of the 12 horses in this field, six are featuring single-digit spreads. That's not so much a testament to this being a level playing field as it is the fact that there is no obvious second-favorite to Bolt d'Oro. Don't be shocked if the favorite ultimately goes off as an odds-on choice and the biggest favorite in any of the Breeders' Cup races this year.
