Breeder's Cup Juvenile is a 1 1/16 mile race, restricted to male 2 year-olds, that hope to make their mark in the Breeder's Cup World Championships and the $2 million purse, makes it the richest 2-year-old race in North America.
Breeder's Cup Juvenile horse race is often a preview of the stars of the Triple Crown races for the following year.
The 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, will return to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th, 2016 and kicks off with a series of "Win and You're In" Challenge races that lead up to the World Championships.
Every year, the Breeders' Cup Championship continues to grow in popularity because of its prestige and keen level of competition.
A two-year old champion will be named in the 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup Sentient Jet Juvenile. There are 11 horses signed up to run in the middle race of the nine-race card as a part of the Breeders' Cup on Saturday, and one will ultimately become the two-year old champ and the presumptive early favorite to win the Kentucky Derby in May.
Not This Time ( Iroquois Stakes )
Gormley ( FrontRunner Stakes )
Practical Joke ( Champagne Stakes )
Classic Empire ( Breeders' Futurity )
Unlike so many of the other Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" races victors, there isn't such a thing as a two-year old who wins one of these races and doesn't come to the big show at the Breeders' Cup Sentient Jet Juvenile.
Not This Time, the 7 to 2 favorite to win this race, was the first of the qualifiers thanks to winning the Iroquois Stakes in September, but right behind were Gormley ( 5/1 ), Practical Joke ( 6/1 ) and Classic Empire ( 4/1 ) in the FrontRunner Stakes, Champagne Stakes and Breeders' Futurity respectively. Perhaps Gormley is the dangerous one of the bunch, knowing that his win came right here at Santa Anita. Still, all four of these horses who were automatic qualifiers are dangerous and are amongst the favorites to win the Breeders' Cup Sentient Jet Juvenile.

This crop of two-year olds very well might not be amongst the horses who are the serious contenders for the Kentucky Derby because so many of the trainers out there just won't run their horses until they reach their three-year old season. However, there are many who have run in Grade 1 races with varying degrees of success.
Syndergaard ( 6/1 ), appropriately named after the Mets' star pitcher, finished second best by a nose to Practical Joke in the Champagne Stakes, and that immediately makes both of them top contenders. Syndergaard might have lost that race, but he was the 2 to 1 favorite that day and will be amongst the favorites here as well. As far as Practical Joke is concerned, he's undefeated in three career starts, including winning not just one, but two Grade 1 races, adding the Hopeful Stakes to his resume as well.
Klimt, breaking from the inside post as a 6 to 1 middling shot, is a name to keep an eye on in the future. He's got three wins in his first five career starts, and he was just short of beating Gormley at the FrontRunner Stakes. He does have wins at the Del Mar Futurity and the Best Pal Stakes though, and he's been the betting favorite in all but one race he's run in for his career.
The win for Gormley was his second in two starts in his career as well. He's been a relative longshot in his first two races though, and that's not a good sign going forward for him in spite of his undefeated mark. It's not often that oddsmakers are just flat out wrong in these situations.
Classic Empire has won three of his four career races. His one loss came when he bucked Irad Ortiz Jr. off of his back. Remember that that's the only race he ran with Ortiz on his back, so assuming that he has Julian Leparoux back in the saddle, that'll present an undefeated combination.
