Age/Sex: 3 Yr Olds & Up

Purse: $2 Million

Post Time: 3:43pm

The Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf is a Thoroughbred horse race, for three years old and up.

Filly & Mare Turf is only for the world’s best female grass horses to compete in this 1 ¼ mile race on the Santa Anita Turf Course for a $2 million purse.

The Breeder's Cup Filly & Mare Turf was first run in 1999 at 1 3/8 miles, owing mainly to Gulfstream Park's grass course configuration, and was again contested like so in the following year.

Come 2001, the distance was then shifted to 10 furlongs.

The 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, will return to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th, 2016 and kicks off with a series of "Win and You're In" Challenge races that lead up to the World Championships.

Every year, the Breeders' Cup Championship continues to grow in popularity because of its prestige and keen level of competition.

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at a Glance

International fillies and mares, specifically those from Europe, generally have a leg up when it comes to running on the turf. That's why many of the past winners of the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf are actually European fillies and mares. Will the 2016 edition of the event be any different? There are certainly some great challengers to contenders from Ireland, France, Chile, Japan and Great Britain.

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf Automatic Qualifiers

Smart Call ( Paddock Stakes )

Azkadellia ( Queen of the Turf Stakes )

Ryans Charm ( Gran Premio Pamplona )

Catch a Glimpse ( Belmont Oaks )

Sea Calisi ( Beverly D. Stakes )

Seventh Heaven ( Yorkshire Oaks )

Parvaneh ( T. Von Zastrow Stutenpreis )

Alice Springs ( Matron Stakes )

Rainha Da Bateria ( Canadian Stakes )

Lady Eli ( Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes )

Avenge ( Rodeo Drive Stakes )

Speedy Boarding ( Prix de l'Opera )

There are a dozen automatic qualifying races for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, so there aren't a lot of wild card spots left to be had. That being said, not all of the contenders are going to be coming to Santa Anita on November 5.

Of the ones that are here though, the most dangerous ones are the horses from Ireland. Seventh Heaven won the Yorkshire Oaks, immediately making her one of the favorites to win the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at 3 to 1. Though there's never been an Irish horse win this race, we've seen France's Zagora and Great Britain's Dank win here in the past.

Smart Call and Azkadellia were the first two horses to qualify for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, but both aren't going to make the trip to Santa Anita. Neither will Parvaneh, Rainha Da Bateria nor Speedy Boarding.

Alice Springs was entered as a pre-entry in this race, but she's going to run against the boys in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Lady Eli was up in the air for a number of the Breeders' Cup races, but she's settled on the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, and she's going to be a tremendous favorite after opening up at 5 to 2. She's only been beaten once in her career, that coming in the Ballston Spa Stakes in August, and even that was a second place finish. She won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf two years ago, and that immediately makes her one of the favorites of this race with nothing else considered. But a fantastic three-year old year is only going to help her out.

The other filly that will always be the top contender is Catch a Glimpse at 12 to 1. She lost her very first race in her career last year, but she went on a great tear from there, winning eight races in a row, including the Belmont Oaks to qualify for this race. However, she finished second at the Lake Placid Stakes and then a woeful seventh at the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup. So which horse is she? The one who rolled to eight straight wins, including the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf last year, or the one who was so bad in August and October in her prep races for this one?
