Defending Champion: Hudson Swafford

TV Coverage: GOLF Channel

The CareerBuilder Challenge, formerly known as the Bob Hope Classic, gets underway January 18-21, 2018. The tournament is one of the oldest on the PGA Tour schedule getting its start in 1960 and is annually played the third or fourth week in January.

The event used to be a 90 hole tournament but in order to draw more top ranked players, it was changed to a 72 hole in 2012.

Three courses will be used the first three days to accommodate the pro-am format. La Quinta Country Club, PGA West and PGA Stadium Course are this year’s rotation of courses.

Many of the greats of the game have etched their name on the trophy. Arnold Palmer won the inaugural event in 1965 and holds the record for winning it five times. Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Fred Couples also have won in the desert.

PGA West TPC Stadium Course

Rated one of the "Top 100 Courses in the World" by GOLF Magazine and the fourth-toughest course in America, TPC Stadium Course is a beast and the host course. The Pete Dye creation is an intimidating layout that will make all the players grind until their final putt.

La Quinta Country Club, the oldest private country club in La Quinta, has been a part of the CareerBuilder Challenge for 51 of the club's 56-year history. La Quinta Country Club is the easiest of the three courses.

At 7,204 yards long, The Nicklaus Tournament Course has a stroke rating of 75.3 and a slope rating of 143. It’s not an easy course with water lurking at every turn. The professionals need to be careful on this track because if they don’t, they will pay the price.

Past winners of the CareerBuilder Challenge include Arnold Palmer, who won it a record five times, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Fred Couples and Phil Mickelson.

Career Builder Challenge Golf Tournament Format

Pro-Am play for first 54 holes: Each of the 156 pros will play with a different amateur partner each day on different courses for three days.

On Sunday, the low 70 professionals and ties will play the final round of the 72-hole PGA TOUR tournament at the Palmer Private at PGA WEST.

The field size for the event will be 144 professionals, an increase of 16 professional spots from the previous format, and 144 amateurs.

Besides the name change and new strategic direction, the tournament also will feature several changes to the professional and amateur format.

The changes include:

  • A four-day tournament, beginning Thursday of tournament week, with the first three rounds played in a pro-am format.
  • The pro-am teams will consist of one professional and one amateur playing in groups of four.
  • For each day of the three round pro-am competition, the professional will have a different amateur partner. Amateurs will compete in daily competitions as well as an overall, three day competition
  • Round 4 will be professionals only with a normal 70 + ties cut.
