The late great Arnold Palmer won the first tournament in Palm Springs in 1960 and the tournament has stayed there ever since. The 57th CareerBuilder Challenge, formerly called the Humana Challenge and the Bob Hope Classic, is set to go down January 19-22, 2017.
The CareerBuilder Challenge is a star-studded pro-am on the PGA Tour, and generally the third event on the West Coast Swing. Three courses are used over the first three days and the cut is made after Saturday’s third round. On Sunday, the low 70 professionals and ties will play the final round at the TPC Stadium Course.

PGA West TPC Stadium Course
Rated one of the "Top 100 Courses in the World" by GOLF Magazine and the fourth-toughest course in America, TPC Stadium Course is a beast and the host course. The Pete Dye creation is an intimidating layout that will make all the players grind until their final putt.
La Quinta Country Club, the oldest private country club in La Quinta, has been a part of the CareerBuilder Challenge for 51 of the club's 56-year history. La Quinta Country Club is the easiest of the three courses.
At 7,204 yards long, The Nicklaus Tournament Course has a stroke rating of 75.3 and a slope rating of 143. It’s not an easy course with water lurking at every turn. The professionals need to be careful on this track because if they don’t, they will pay the price.
Past winners of the CareerBuilder Challenge include Arnold Palmer, who won it a record five times, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Fred Couples and Phil Mickelson.
Career Builder Challenge Golf Tournament Format
Pro-Am play for first 54 holes: Each of the 156 pros will play with a different amateur partner each day on different courses for three days.
On Sunday, the low 70 professionals and ties will play the final round of the 72-hole PGA TOUR tournament at the Palmer Private at PGA WEST.
The field size for the event will be 144 professionals, an increase of 16 professional spots from the previous format, and 144 amateurs.
Besides the name change and new strategic direction, the tournament also will feature several changes to the professional and amateur format.
The changes include:
- A four-day tournament, beginning Thursday of tournament week, with the first three rounds played in a pro-am format.
- The pro-am teams will consist of one professional and one amateur playing in groups of four.
- For each day of the three round pro-am competition, the professional will have a different amateur partner. Amateurs will compete in daily competitions as well as an overall, three day competition

2017 CareerBuilder Challenge Results
Hudson Swafford won the fittingly named CareerBuilder Challenge on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, following three straight birdies with a closing par for a one-stroke victory over Canada’s Adam Hadwin.
Swafford shot a 5-under 67 on the Stadium Course at PGA West to finish the pro-am event at 20-under 268. The 29-year-old former Georgia player earned $1,044,000 and his first spot in the Masters.
Hadwin, of Abbotsford, B.C., came back with a 70 after his third-round 59 to finish second.
What is known now as the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course, California will be the next golf event on the US PGA Tour calendar after the Humana Challenge.
