When: Saturday, March 8, 2014
Where: MGM, Las Vegas - 6:00 p.m. PST
Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) will return to the MGM Grand ring, to face brawler and dangerous Mexican countryman Alfredo "Perro" Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) on March 8th, 2014 in the main event of a Showtime PPV card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Billed as "Toe-To-Toe," the event will also match WBC 122-pound beltholder Leo Santa Cruz (26-0-1, 15 knockouts) against Cristian Mijares (49-7-2, 24 KOs) and lightweight contender Omar Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs) will face off with Ricardo “Dinamita” Alvarez, (23-2-3, 14 KOs), Canelo Alvarez's older brother.
Also on the card will be the first defense by IBF 154-pound titleholder Carlos Molina (22-5-2, 6 KOs) against prospect Jermall Charlo (17-0, 13 KOs), the 23-year-old twin brother of unbeaten junior middleweight contender Jermell Charlo.
This is the fight of Canelo after he suffered his first loss by a majority decision to Floyd Mayweather, last September, and had to give up his WBC light-middleweight belt.
Mean while, Angulo (22-3, 18 KOs) suffered an eye injury in his fight with Lara in which his orbital bone was damaged. However, he’s healed up from the injury and is ready to go.
Angulo would have had a good chance of beating Lara if not for the eye injury, because he had knocked him down twice and was wearing him down with body shots. His best wins have come against the likes of Gabriel Rosado and Joel Julio.
March 8th has been a marquee date in boxing history since 1971, that was the first time "Smokin" Joe Frazier first met Muhammad Ali in the ring to begin their epic trilogy.
Now, eight fighters, including two of the most exciting Mexican stars of today, will attempt to do their part to add to the lore of that date.
