UFC 86 - Jackson vs. Griffin
The Ultimate Fighting Championship has officially announced UFC 86 “Jackson vs. Griffin”, which will take place on July 5th in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The pay-per-view event will be headlined by “The Ultimate Fighter 7 coach and UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and fellow-coach and former “Ultimate Fighter” winner Forrest Griffin who will clash for the UFC 205-pound title.
Forrest Griffin has come a long way, sence he started in the UFC as a competitor on The Ultimate Fighter and now he is a coach of the show. Rampage Jackson took the UFC by storm by defeating Chuck Liddell to become the UFC Light Heavyweight champion.
Jackson then defeated PRIDE Middleweight Champion Dan Henderson at UFC 75,on September 8, 2007 in London, England, via unanimous decision to unify the two organizations' titles.
As for Forrest Griffin, He is the first-season winner of Spike TV's The Ultimate Fighter, a reality show which showcases mixed martial arts. He defeated Stephan Bonnar in a popular final bout, widely acclaimed as one of the best MMA fights of all time, winning by unanimous decision and landing him a professional contract to fight in the UFC
Forrest Griffin, currently holds a professional mixed martial arts record of fifteen wins (3 by KO/TKO, 7 by submission and 5 by decision) and four losses (2 by KO/TKO and 2 by decision).
Quinton Jackson was listed as an early -280 favorite in this one. Forrest Griffin would pay just over $200 for every $100 bet if the bet is placed early and he should happen to win.
The UFC has also confirmed three additional bouts for the July 5th fight card. In main card action lightweight contender Joe Stevenson will take on Gleison Tibau and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir will face Justin McCully. On the untelevised preliminary card, Melvin Guillard will return to the octagon against Dennis Siver.
Joe Stevenson is set to return to the Octagon for the first time since coming up short in his quest for the UFC lightweight title, Stevenson is coming off a hard fought loss for the UFC lightweight title to the “Prodigy” BJ Penn at UFC 80.
A winner of "The Ultimate Fighter," Stevenson (28-8-0) earned a UFC title shot after rattling off four consecutive wins in the lightweight division. The 25-year-old Californian has his work cut out for him in a very deep 155-pound class if he is to make his way back to title contention.
Tibau is also coming off a decision loss to Tyson Griffin at UFC 81.
Tibau, also 25, had a four-fight winning streak stopped with a decision loss to highly-regarded Tyson Griffin in February. With a 3-2 record in the UFC, Tibau (15-5) joins an anticipated summer card headlined by the UFC light heavyweight title bout between Quinton Jackson and Forrest Griffin.
The Former heavyweight champion Frank Mir (11-3) will tangle with Justin McCully (8-3-2) at UFC 86 on July 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Frank Mir is fresh of a big submission win over Brock Lesnar at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” in February. This marks Mir’s second consecutive win (other win against Antoni Hardonk at UFC 74: “Respect”). Last time Mir lost was at UFC 65: “Bad Intentions” to Brandon Vera via TKO(Strikes) in November 2006.
McCully will be coming off a year-long layoff after defeating Antoni Hardonk via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 9 back in April 2007.
