The Couture-Liddell rematch has been brewing for almost two years since the then 40-year-old Couture, “The Natural” from Portland, Ore., made a dramatic impact on the light heavyweight division with a third-round technical knockout of “The Iceman” Liddell to win the UFC interim light heavyweight title at UFC 43: Meltdown. Couture, the former two-time UFC heavyweight champ (13-6-0 in mixed martial arts), Couture is the only fighter in UFC history to win titles twice in two different weight divisions. Liddell (14-3-0) from San Luis Obispo, Calif. Liddell is predicting
that he will win by a knockout and be the light heavyweight champ.

UFC 52 Results

Liddell finally achieved his dream by knocking out reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Couture in the first round, to capture his first taste of UFC gold. Couture had never been knocked out prior to this fight. The victory signaled a new area in the UFC as Liddell became the light heavyweight champion. Liddell appeared extremely pleased to redeem himself for the devastating loss he had suffered two years earlier to the very same Randy Couture.

The co-main event also featured a rematch as Matt Hughes defended his welterweight championship against the hard charging Frank Trigg. Hughes successfully defended his UFC welterweight title by submitting challenger Trigg at 4:05 seconds into the very first round, with a rear naked choke (Submission).
