UFC middleweight champion “Spider” Anderson Silva (26-4 MMA, 11-0 UFC) will defend his 185-pound title against former U.S. Olympic team alternate, two—time National Champion in Greco—Roman wrestling, Chael Sonnen (24-10-1 MMA, 4-3 UFC) at UFC 117 in Oakland August 7, at the Oracle Arena. Along with the headlining middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, seven additional fights were confirmed.

Silva will aim to make it seven straight successful middleweight title defenses when he steps in the Octagon against the colorful Sonnen. Silva is known for his striking abilities, Silva is also a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under the world-renowned Nogueira brothers and a dynamic fighter who can do it all in the Octagon. His length often causes problems for his opponents, as only two of his last 11 victories have gone to the scorecards. But the champion now faces a fighter that believes he has figured out a way to stop The Spider.

Silva is coming off a strange and disappointing five-round unanimous decision over Demian Maia (11-2) at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi April 10.

Durin the first three rounds, Silva taunted Maia to come after him. When Maia obliged in the final two rounds, Silva ran from him. The Spider” as a 5—to—1 favorite to hold on to his and extend his Octagon winning streak to 12.

Chael Sonnen is riding a three fight win streak, Sonnen has racked up wins over top—level UFC competition by taking out the likes of Dan Miller, Yushin Okami, and he dominated Nate Marquardt (29-9-2) in a three-round unanimous decision win at UFC 109 in Las Vegas February, treating him like a rag-doll. Chael Sonnen will now try to make it four—in—a—row by adding the name of Anderson Silva to that list.

UFC 117 fight Prediction

Sonnen will look to take Silva down, and hold him there, while Anderson Silva will look to T(KO) or submit him.

UFC 117's card includes a bout between welterweight ex-champion Matt Hughes and Ricardo "Big Dog" Almeida. Hughes defeated Renzo Gracie in his last fight, with a one-sided victory in April at UFC 112.

Almeida (12-3) has dropped down from 185 pounds and is coming off an impressive win over Matt (The Immortal) Brown.

In light-heavyweight bouts, Thiago Silva tackles Tim (The Barbarian) Boetsch and Rodney (Shonuff The Master) Wallace faces off against UFC newcomer Stanislav Nedkov.

In welterweight action, Dustin Hazelett looks to bounce back from his knockout loss to Paul (Semtex) Daley at UFC 108 in January when he takes on Rick (The Horror) Story.

Also at 170 pounds, Ben (Killa B) Saunders meets veteran Dennis (Superman) Hallman and Johny Hendricks fights Charlie (The Spaniard) Brenneman.
