Date: April 10, 2010
Time: 1PM ET/10AM PT
Location: Concert Arena, Ferrari World, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi
Broadcast: Pay-per-view (replay at 10PM ET/7PM PT)
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) makes history in it's upcoming pay-per-view (PPV) fight card, for it's first-ever trip to Abu Dhabi. This UFC 112 will host the Octagons first outdoor debut at the Concert Arena from Ferrari World, Yas Island, on Saturday, April 10.
The Main event of the evening brings us the incredible Anderson “The Spider” Silva (25-4) taking on jiu jitsu specialist Demian Maia (12-1). Maia will step in for the injured Vitor Belfort. Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia will be a matchup between MMA’s best striker and MMA’s best grappler.
Silva last saw action in a non-title light heavyweight bout with Forrest Griffin at UFC 101 which “The Spider” won by first round knockout. Anderson will be looking to make his sixth succesful title defense at UFC 112, with previous defenses coming over the likes of Thales Leites, Patrick Cote, Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin and Nate Marquardt.
Maia earned a unanimous decision against Dan Miller at UFC 109, in Las Vegas. The 32-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has only one loss on his reccord, when he faced off with fellow contender Nate Marquardt at UFC 102 last August. Maia, is well renowned for his submissions, 5 of his 6 UFC wins have come by submission, three of which were from rear naked chokes and the other two were via triangle chokes.
The co-main event will also, feature UFC lightweight title bout between B.J. Penn and Frankie Edgar, as well as a featured welterweight matchup between former champion Matt Hughes and Renzo Gracie.
B.J. Penn Vs. Frankie Edgar
Despite B.J. Penn being a celebrated black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Penn has proven to be a proficient boxer, usually out-striking his opponents whenever the fight stays standing-up. The reigning 155-pound champion has looked nearly invincible since returning to the lightweight division in June 2007. In fact, "The Prodigy" has violently finished all five of his opponents in his weight class, including a submission win (rear naked choke) over Kenny Florian at UFC 101 in August 2009.
Edgar, no slouch in the division, has also defeated top-notch competition at 155lbs. Frankie Edgar has posted wins over Sean Sherk, Tyson Griffin, Hermes Franca and Jim Miller during his MMA career. His only mistake during that span was a high-altitude unanimous decision loss to Gray Maynard, when the two wrestling standouts huffed and puffed their way to the judges scorecards at UFC Fight Night 13.
Matt Hughes (43-7 MMA, 16-5 UFC) Vs. Renzo Gracie (13-6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC)
Hughes, who had two memorable title runs at welterweight, hasn't fought since his decision victory over Matt Serra at UFC 98 in July. He rebounded from back-to-back losses to Georges St-Pierre and Thiago Alves with the win. The 35-year-old is just 2-3 over the past three years with victories over non-contenders Chris Lytle and Serra. In 2006 he defeated Royce Gracie, Renzo's first cousin, at UFC 60.
Renzo Gracie, a member of the legendary Gracie family and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, last fought in early-2007, defeating Frank Shamrock by disqualification at EliteXC’s debut event. Prior to his meeting with Shamrock, Gracie scored a pair of victories over Matt Huges’ former coach, Pat Miletich (28-7-2) as well as “Ronin” Carlos Newton (13-13) in bouts for the now defunct International Fight League. Gracie was also a coach of the IFL’s New York Pitbulls.
