Brock Lesnar has faced some of the best heavyweight fighters in the world. The Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title holder dominated seasoned veteran Heath Herring and put away former UFC champions Randy Couture and Frank Mir.
Now, Lesnar will face off with undefeated 6-foot-3, 262-pound top contender Shane Carwin at UFC 106. Also on the card, one of the brightest stars in UFC history returns, as former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz battles UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman in what promises to be a ground war of epic proportions.
Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin
Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (4-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will defend his title against the undefeated top contender Shane Carwin (11-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC). Lesnar, who is 4-1 in his brief MMA career with his only loss coming to Frank Mir, which he avenged at UFC 100, doesn’t seem to think too much of Carwin’s sparkling resume.
Shane Carwin (fighting out of Denver, Colo.) has done nothing short of destroying his competition. The former NCAA Division II national wrestling champion and All-American college football player has put away all three of his UFC opponents in under two minutes. The 34-year-old from Greeley, Colo. handed TKO losses to Christian Wellisch and Neil Wain before turning heads in the mixed martial arts community with a devastating 69-second knockout victory against title contender Gabriel Gonzaga. The heavy-handed heavyweight remains a perfect 11-0 in his pro MMA career and faces his toughest challenge to date.
Forrest Griffin vs. Tito Ortiz
Former UFC star Tito Ortiz (15-6-1 MMA, 14-6-1 UFC) will face a stern test in his first match in the Ultimate Fighting Championship since undergoing back surgery Oct. 6, 2008, when he takes on Forrest Griffin at UFC 106.
Ortiz, had been slated to face Mark Coleman. But Coleman had to withdraw from the bout Monday after suffering a second-degree tear of the medial collateral ligament in his knee.
Both men are former light heavyweight champions. Griffin defeated Quinton “Rampage” Jackson for the belt last year before losing it in his first defense to Rashad Evans. Griffin is coming off a first-round knockout loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 101.
Ortiz will be looking to pick up his first win since October 2006, where he defeated Ken Shamrock for the third time. Since that Victory he has gone 0-2-1, losing to Chuck Liddell, drawing with Rashad Evans and most recently, losing to current UFC light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida at UFC 84 last May. All but one of Ortiz's 22 career fights have come with the UFC. He started with the promotion nearly 12 years ago at UFC 13 and holds notable wins over Guy Mezger, Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort and Forrest Griffin.
Also on the UFC 106 fight card is a light-heavyweight bout between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Luiz Cane.
Nogueira (17-3) has been on a five-fight winning streak that began following a loss to Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at Pride 33 in early 2007. He has kept busy traveling across the globe fighting in Japan, the United States, and Canada since the closure of Pride.
Cane (10-1) has quickly risen to contention in the UFC light heavyweight division defeating Sokoudjou, Steve Cantwell, and Jason Lambert. His only stumble since entering the Octagon was a disqualification loss to James Irvin at UFC 79 due to an illegal knee to the head while Irvin was down.
