UFC 100 is set to be the biggest match in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) history. It will be held on July 11, 2009 in Las Vegas, Neveada. There will be two championship fights in the heavyweight and welterweight divisions!
Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar defends his title against former champ Frank Mir, Frank is back to prove his victory over Lesnar in February of 2008 was no fluke and Georges St. Pierre will defend his welterweight title against number one division contender
Thiago “Pitbull” Alves. Also, U.S. vs U.K. coaches Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping square off in a pivotal middleweight showdown.
Brock Lesnar Vs Frank Mir
After winning the 2000 NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Championships as a heavyweight, Brock Lesnar entered the ranks of professional wrestling. An immediate hit in the WWE, Lesnar went on to win the WWE heavyweight championship on three occasions. After a brief stint in the NFL, Brock Lesnar took up mixed martial arts, and once again made an immediate impact on a professional sport when he entered the UFC. At UFC 91, Brock Lesnar defeated UFC Hall-of-Famer Randy Couture to claim the heavyweight championship.
In their last meeting Lesnar was in control the whole fight then a controversial stand up by referee Steve Mazzagatti gave Mir life again. Mir ended up submitting the inexperienced Lesnar via kneebar. This time around we will see if Mir can overcome Lesnar’s power and size and get the takedown or will he stand and trade shots.
Georges St-Pierre Vs Thiago Alves
St. Pierre last defended his title in decisive fashion over UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn (13-5-1 MMA, 9-4-1 UFC) in a rematch of their 2006 clash. St. Pierre dominated Penn for four straight rounds. Penn acknowledged that he had sustained such abuse that he was more than likely knocked out on his feet after the second round. His corner threw in the towel at the end of round four to save the Hawaiian from further punishment.
Alves, 25, has established himself as one of the welterweight division’s most deadly strikers. He has won seven in a row, including commanding victories over former champion Matt Hughes and top-10 contender Josh Koscheck in 2008.
Thiago presents a wealth of problems for George, but my prediction is here is we are going to get to see George physically finish his first opponent since recapturing the belt. BJ Penn quit after the 4th round, but did not officially have the referee stop it and I think we will see that here. Georges is going to really impress fans with his ability to not discouraged when struggling for a takedown early and will leverage all of talent he has for a late stoppage win.
Dan Henderson Vs Michael Bisping
Also, Dan Henderson will fight Michael Bisping in pivotal middleweight showdown. A USA vs. UK matchup guaranteed to spill some blood!
Bisping has just signed a new 8-fight, two year deal with MMA's leading organisation, and will be pitched against former two-weight world champion Henderson, after the pair were rival coaches on TUF 9.
Bisping was an early selection to coach Team U.K. on the show, which is the first season to use a country-vs.-country format. Henderson won the Team U.S. slot by beating Rich Franklin in January.
