South Florida Bulls vs Oregon Ducks
Spread: South Florida -6
Over/Under Total: 52.5
By JR Valdez
Both of these teams had high aspirations earlier in the season both reaching the #2 ranking and then slumping off the grid almost completely. For Oregon it was the loss of heisman hopeful Dennis Dixon who suffered a season ending knee injury leading to the Ducks losing their last 3 games of the year, I would say they have lost all their momentum and backup QB Brady Leaf is not ready to shoulder the burden which means its going to be Jonathan Stewart show on the ground the whole day. For South Florida I was very disappointed you could tell from their performance in 2006 that they would be a great team this year and started out as just that and then somewhere along the line they completely lost focus and dropped 3 games in a row taking them out of contention for a BCS bowl. Now after winning their last 3 games it looks as though Sophomore QB Matt Grothe has got his team back on track. Bottom line is without Dennis Dix the Ducks are a one dimensional team on the ground and while their defense is good, South Florida has too many weapons at their disposal to wear them out and keep them guessing, the play is South Florida and keep your eye on them, they will be in a BCS Bowl next year and you can quote me on it. Sun Bowl
The Sun Bowl is steeped in history as the second oldest continuously held bowl game in college football history.
And the tradition continues this Dec. 31 in El Paso as a Pac-10 program will take on competition from either the Big East or Big 12.
Sun Bowl History
The Sun Bowl is held each year in the stadium of the same name, which serves as the home arena for the UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso) Miners. This huge event, the second oldest of these gridiron classics, only the Rose Bowl is older and dates back to January 1, 1935. Various sponsors have supported The Sun Bowl and attached their names to the bowl game, you may have heard of the John Hancock Sun Bowl or the Wells Fargo Sun Bowl. currently, it’s officially the Vitalis Sun Bowl.
Nowadays the Sun Bowl features a match-up of teams from two long-honored conferences: the Pac-10 and the Big Ten. However, the very first Sun Bowl was a fund-raiser involving El Paso High, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and four other local service organizations to aid poor children and upgrade the school stadium. The following year the bowl was staged between New Mexico State University and Hardin-Simmons, setting the precedent of a mid-winter collegiate contest which continues to this day. The current stadium was built in 1963 and expanded in 1981 to seat over 50,000.
Over the decades, numerous participants in the Sun Bowl have gone on to fame and fortune, such as, Ara Parseghian, Merlin Olsen, Tony Dorsett, Barry Sanders, Billy Stevens, Charlie Johnson and Jesse Whittenton.
One of the oldest of the post-season games, the Sun Bowl never achieved the major status of the other bowls that date to the 1930s. In fact, it lost its identity entirely for five years, 1989-93, when it was known as the John Hancock Bowlunder sponsorship from the insurance company. It became the Sun Bowl again in 1994, when the sponsorship ended. The Sun Bowl now hosts a game between Pac-10 and Big Ten teams.
The Sun Bowl was first played on January 1, 1935, as a fund-raising event for a local service club, to benefit underprivileged children and to finance improvements to the El Paso High School Stadium. It has grown into El Paso's number one national attraction and is second only to the Rose Bowl in longevity. On October 18, 1934, at a meeting of the El Paso Kiwanis Club, Dr. Brice Schuller suggested that the club sponsor a football game on New Year's Day, matching an El Paso High School All-Star Team against a worthy opponent.
The motion was passed unanimously. It was decided to ask for public suggestions as to the name of this annual game, and the name "Sun Bowl" was submitted by Dr. C. M. Hendricks, who became the first Sun Bowl Association president. The following year, a week-long schedule of events was added to the Sun Bowl festivities, and four other local service clubs (Rotary, Lions, Optimist and Active 20-30) joined the Kiwanis in coordinating the entire "Sun Carnival" calendar. In 1936, New Mexico State and Hardin-Simmons were invited to play, and the Sun Bowl has been a college game ever since.
Over the years, many great collegiate stars who went on to illustrious football careers in both the college and professional ranks have participated in the Sun Bowl. Some of these athletes include Ara Parseghian, Merlin Olsen, Tony Dorsett, Barry Sanders, Billy Stevens, Charlie Johnson and Jesse Whittenton. Another famous Sun Bowl participant was Burt Reynolds, who was a member of the 1955 Florida State team.
Today, events held in conjunction with the Sun Bowl include the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic, the Las Palmas Del Sol Sun Bowl Parade and the State Farm Sun Bowl Basketball Tournament. During the early years of the Sun Bowl, it was a tradition to match the Border Conference champion against the best available opponent. Today the Sun Bowl matches teams from the tradition-rich Big Ten and Pac-10 Conferences.
