The NASCAR Sprint Cup series heads to Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina for the running of the 2011 "SHOWTIME" Southern 500. The Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway has been around in one form or another since the late 50’s. The first Southern 500 was run in 1950 and won by Johnny Mantz.
Darlington was NASCAR's first superspeedway track. It hosts the NASCAR Nextel Cup and the Busch Series races. With it's unique egg-shaped layout and a length is 1.366 miles (or 2.2. km), Darlington is one of stock car racing's most challenging tracks. The track is known as "The Track Too Tough To Tame" or "The Lady In Black", thanks to the black stripe that usually winds up on all the cars by the end of the race.
Showtime Networks Inc., is presently the title sponsor for the Darlington Raceway's Southern 500. Like many sporting events, Darlington Raceway has struggled to find corporate backing in a floundering economy. Showtime will be Darlington's third title sponsor, after a five-year deal with the Carolina Dodge Dealers ended in 2008.
In the past, Dodge as the primary sponsor. This race has been known as the Dodge Avenger 500, Dodge Challenger 500, and is now tentatively being hailed as the Southern 500. Regardless, the combination of Darlington Raceway and a long history have made the Darlington drama a favorite among NASCAR bettors.
It is one of the top races for fans to bet on. Follow the Nascar betting action at Darlington Raceway and bet on this year race, as history is made as the top names in NASCAR compete in 367 thrilling laps in 501 miles.
