The Irwin Tools Night Race airs live on ABC television at 7:30 PM on Saturday night, August 27, 2011 as the green flag goes down and the lights go on at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee. The Speedway is also the home of the Food City 500  but the Irwin Tools Night Race is more popular race.

Irwin Tools Night Race History

Groundbreaking for Bristol International Speedway, as Bristol Motor Speedway was originally known, took place in 1960. The track was an exact half-mile and the first NASCAR Sprint Cup race was July 30, 1961.

The first night race was held in the fall of 1978, and the name changed to Bristol International Raceway. The race was scheduled for the later part of August on a Saturday evening. The race had been aired on ESPN from 2007 through 2009 and in 2010 it started to air on ABC, the first time the race has been on broadcast television in many years. The race is the third of four races on the sprint Cup Series schedule.

2011 Irwin Tools Night Race Results

Brad Keselowski did the improbable by winning the Irwin Tools Night Race at the Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night, his third victory of the 2011 season and second since a bad break of his ankle a few weeks ago at a testing session. His win at Bristol all but assures Keselowski of a wild-card slot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, and may, if his luck and prowess continue in these last two races before the Chase, race his way in with points.

The night brought great action and drama. Second place finisher was Martin Truex Jr. followed by Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Jamie McMurray took fifth. Matt Kenseth came in sixth, Denny Hamlin brought home seventh, and pole sitter Ryan Newman finished eighth. Carl Edwards took ninth while Marcos Ambrose sewed up tenth. Keselowski’s wins over the last five weeks, in addition to Kyle Busch, Marcos Ambrose, and Paul Menard, place him and the others in the Sprint Summer Showdown where $3 million will be awarded to one of these drivers, a lucky fan, and a charity on September 4th in Atlanta. Because Keselowski has two wins he will be playing for two fans who would split the $1 million if he wins.

2010 Irwin Tools Night Race Results

Kyle Busch held off David Reutimann (by 0.677 seconds) to win the IRWIN Tools Night Race at Bristol, and made NASCAR history by becoming the first driver to win all three NASCAR top series in one weekend.

Busch (who led the most laps with 282 laps of the 500 that were run) received his 3rd series win of the 2010 season, his 19th series career win and 4th series win at Bristol Motor Speedway.

With the win, Busch now jumps into third-place in the point standings (75 points behind second-place, Jeff Gordon, and 351 points behind leader, Kevin Harvick).

Following Busch and Reutimann to the drop of the checkered flag were Jamie McMurray finishing in third, Clint Bowyer finishing fourth, Kasey Kahne fifth, Ryan Newman sixth, Juan Pablo Montoya seventh, Greg Biffle eighth, Kurt Busch ninth and Matt Kenseth rounding out the top-10 finishers.

2009 Sharpie 500 Results

Kyle Busch made a statement Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.

So did pole-sitter Mark Martin, who pressured Busch during a four-lap run to the checkered flag of the Sharpie 500 but couldn't make the pass for the win.

Instead, Busch won for the fourth time this season and for the second time at Bristol in 2009, despite having a car Saturday night that was no better than second-best.

Busch showed emphatically he is not out of the Chase for the Sprint Cup picture, and Martin strengthened his hold of a spot in NASCAR's postseason. Busch moved up two positions in the standings to 13th, 34 points behind 12th place Matt Kenseth.

Martin likewise gained two spots to 10th, 60 points ahead of Busch. The top 12 drivers after the Sept. 12 race at Richmond qualify for the Chase.
