US PGA Championship Winners & Results

2008 PGA Winner & Information

Harrington wins PGA Championship

Padraig HarringtonIreland's Padraig Harrington outlasted Spain's Sergio Garcia over the final holes Sunday at Michigan's Oakland Hills to become the first European to win the PGA Championship since Tommy Armour in 1930.

He also is just the fifth golfer ever to take the British Open and PGA back-to-back in the same year.

Tiger Woods, out for the season after knee surgery in June, managed the feat twice, in 2000 and 2006.

Harrington holed putts on the 16th (12 feet), 17th (eight feet) and 18th (18 feet) to hold off Garcia, who was playing some of his best golf in recent years.

The Irishman shot a 4-under 66 for the day, came from three off the pace and finished at 277. Garcia, with a 66, and third-round leader Ben Curtis, of the U.S., finished tied for second at 1-under 279.

"I think I was willing them into the hole at that stage," said Harrington of the three putts on the final three holes. "You have to get focussed and let the adrenaline help with that."

Harrington came into 18 with a one-shot lead on Garcia, after he had birdied the par-three 17th and the Spaniard had lipped his attempt, settling for par.

Both had poor tee shots on the final hole — one that had given up just a single birdie all day, to Steve Flesch. Harrington's shot landed in a fairway bunker and Garcia's found deep rough.

Garcia's second shot was into a bunker near the green, while Harrington caught his shot fat and left his ball in the high rough about 143 yards out.

As Garcia sprinted up the hill to use the bathroom, however, Harrington pulled a great shot out that went on the green about 10 feet from the hole.

Garcia pretty much needed to hole out from the sand, but could not, leaving the winner to drain his putt for the win.

"I obviously came up a little bit short," said Garcia, who was so close to his first Major. "But I guess that's the way things go sometimes.

"The only thing I can do is go back home with my head up high and keep working on it."

Camillo Villegas, of Colombia, tied for fourth at plus-1 with Henrik Stenson of Sweden.

Canada's Mike Weir shot 4-over for the day and finished 13-over for the tournament, 16 back of Harrington.

2007 PGA Winner & Information

The Southern Hills Country Club, located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, plays host to the 89th PGA Championship

Tiger Woods PGA 2007There was a different texture to this five-mile walk, an appearance of tension and conflict in Tiger Woods's midst as he stepped into the furnace of Southern Hills Country Club and tried to pass another milepost. As an old foe and a hot-tempered journeyman prodded him along the way, Woods pushed back during the 89th PGA Championship, throwing a roundhouse punch after an early birdie and holding off all challengers in the end. With a one-under-par 69 in the final round Sunday, Woods snared a two-shot victory over Woody Austin to claim his first major championship of the season and the 13th of his career.  When he tapped in for par, the 31-year-old Woods thrust his hands in the air, scaled the hill behind the green and walked into the scorer's room, where his wife, Elin, and daughter, Sam Alexis, were waiting for him.

With an eight-under-par 272 total, Woods won his fourth PGA Championship and assured himself of at least one major title in each of the last three years. He also improved to 13-0 when holding at least a share of the lead after 54 holes in a major. Although he won four PGA Tour events earlier in the year, Woods said Saturday night that his year in golf could only be great if he won a major title.  After runner-up finishes at the Masters and the United States Open and a tie for 12th at the British Open, Woods was able to navigate his golf ball through the tall trees of Southern Hills to win back-to-back PGA Championships for the second time in his career. (He also won in 1999 and 2000.)  With a three-shot lead over Stephen Ames (76) heading into the final round, Woods bogeyed No. 2 after driving into the left rough, but he quickly recovered with birdies at No. 4 and No. 7.  When he rolled in a birdie from 25 feet on the 245-yard par-3 eighth hole, his lead had grown to five shots.

It was another example of Tiger Woods' ability to dominate the field and impress even himself as his play was unwaivering throughout the weekend.

Tiger 2006 PGA WinnerMEDINAH, Ill. -- Under a beautiful, blue, late afternoon sky, with shadows splashing across the green and a mass of admirers engulfing the length of the 18th hole, Tiger Woods tapped in for par to cap a five-shot victory in the 88th PGA Championship at Medinah Country Club on Sunday.

2005 PGA Winner & Information

2005 PGA Championship, August 11-14, 2005 at Baltusrol Golf Club, New Jersey, USA.

2005 PGA WinnerPhil Mickelson has done it again, claiming a major championship with more final-hole dramatics. Baltusrol Golf Course

The Lower Course - Par 70 (34/36) 7,191 Yds. The Lower Course at Baltusrol Golf Club is reminiscent of its Scottish ancestors, with stretches of flat, open land and greens surrounded by mounds and bunkers that have a rugged quality to them. It has been home to countless dramatic championships in its stellar history.

No. 4 : - 194 Yards - Par 3

Baltusrol Golf Course has hosted a national championship in every decade of the twentieth century except one, a record no other club can match. The United States Open has been played seven times at Baltusrol, on three different courses. The first 18-hole course, the Old Course, was originally designed as a one-of-a-kind combination layout, a short course and long course rolled into one. In time, the short course would be abandoned and the long course would evolve into what became known as the Old Course. It featured huge cross bunkers, the first island green, and pit bunkers faced with railroad ties. In the boldest innovation of all, this Old Course was scrapped to make way for the Dual Courses!

Every year the best players take each other on, on one of the finest courses in the USA. The US PGA Championship began during World War I and The Professional Golfers Association of America runs the event. The first USPGA event was held at the Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York in 1916. The first winner Jim Barnes won $500.
The trophy was donated by Rodman Wanamaker and has henceforth been known as the Wanamaker trophy. Back then it was a match play tournament, with the switch to stroke play occurring in 1958 when Dow Finsterwald finished 14 under par.

The PGA Championship is an annual golf tournament, The PGA Championship is one of the four Major Championships in men's golf, and it is the golf season's final major, It is played
in August every year. It is an official money event on both the PGA TOUR and the PGA
European Tour.

After a golf player wins The PGA Players Golf Championship he will receive several privileges, such as he will be automatically invited to play in the other three majors
(The Masters, US Open and British Open) for the next five years, and are exempt from qualifying for the PGA Championship through age 65. They also receive membership on the PGA TOUR for the following five seasons and invitations to The Players Championship for five years.
