Atlanta Motor Speedway is gearing up to host the AdvoCare 500 on September 4th, for the second-ever NASCAR Sprint Cup Series night race on Labor Day weekend.

Formerly known as the The Pep Boys Auto 500 and before that it was the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500. The Atlanta Labourday Classic 500 is one of two races held at Atlanta Motor Speedway - the other being the Kobalt Tools 500 held earlier in March. The AdvoCare 500 falls late in the NASCAR season and expect a heated competition, as NASCAR's top drivers compete for late-season points before entering the Chase for the Sprint Cup. With only a few races left after this week, Sprint Cup points are like gold.

Atlanta Motor Speedway History

The first Atlanta Motor Speedway race was won by one of the most heated names in all of racing. Glenn Fireball Roberts won the first race at the track, on July 31, 1960. After Fireball, there's been a trail of big-name champions in Atlanta, Georgia, including Bill Elliot, Richard Petty, Rusty Wallace, and Tony Stewart. Formerly known as the Atlanta International Raceway, the now Atlanta Motor Speedway, is located in Hampton, just to the south of the city Atlanta. 2010 Atlanta Labourday Classic 500 Results

Tony Stewart kicked his Chevrolet into gear at the right time Sunday night while simultaneously delivering a jolt to his Sprint Cup championship bid.

The two-time champion snapped a 31-race winless streak with a victory in the Emory HealthCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, blowing past runner-up Carl Edwards on a restart with 24 laps remaining.

With his third win at Atlanta (and first since 2006) and the 38th of his career, Stewart clinched a berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup and a 10-point bonus to start the 10-race title playoff in NASCAR's premier series.

2009 Pep Boys 500 Results

It was the first time under the lights at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and it was Kasey Kahne who held off Kevin Harvick in the Pep Boys Auto 500 to win his second NSCS race of the 2009 season.

Kahne, who led 60 of the 325 laps, won his 11th series career race, and is now in 6th-place in the points standings, with only one race left (next weekend’s Richmond International Speedway’s Chevy Rock & Roll 400) to determine the top-12 for the chase to the championship.

The series points leader, Tony Stewart, who finished 11th, now leads Jeff Gordon (finished 8th) by 237 points, and 6th-place finisher, Denny Hamlin, clinches a spot in the chase.

Following Kahne and Harvick to the drop of the checkered flag were Juan Pablo Montoya in third, David Reutimann fourth, Mark Martin fifth, Denny Hamlin sixth, Brian Vickers seventh, Jeff Gordon eighth, Ryan Newman ninth and Greg Biffle rounds out the top-10 finishers.
