Watkins Glen Track History

Watkins Glen International, affectionately known as "The Glen" is located at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, near Watkins Glen, New York. The Glen hosted a variety of races from its opening in 1957 until it closed under financial pressures in 1981. The track was rescued from bankruptcy by Corning Glass and International Speedway Corp. reopening in 1984. In 1986 NASCAR Winston Cup racing returned to The Glen and has been a staple on the schedule every since. Also, One of only two stops on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup schedule where the drivers have to turn right. The historic Watkins Glen road course really puts drivers to the test.

At only 220 ½ miles, the Heluva Good Sour Cream Dips at Watkins Glen is one of the shortest races on the NASCAR circuit, so it's a bit ironic that it might have the longest race name. This 90-lap race is also among the most unique NASCAR events as it is run at the historic Watkins Glen International in New York. The 3.4-mile Grand Prix road course features 11 turns, in stark contrast to the traditional oval that most NASCAR races are contested on. The length of the frontstretch is 2,150 feet and the length of the backstretch is 2,600 feet. Track Width varies from 36' to 48' wide, averaging 38' wide. And while this race often draws some of the top drivers from Indy racing, it has been NASCAR star Tony Stewart who has dominated this event with five victories since '02. Jeff Gordon, who also excels at road course races, has won three times at the Glen.

2011 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 Winner

It was Denny Hamlin holding off Matt Kenseth (by 0.281 seconds) at Michigan International Speedway to win the NSCS Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400. This was Hamlin’s 1st series win of the 2011 season, his 17th series career win and his 2nd series win at Michigan International Speedway. Following Hamlin and Kenseth to the drop of the checkered flag were: Hamlin’s fellow Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Kyle Busch finishing third, followed by Paul Menard finishing fourth and Carl Edwards (who leads in the points with a 20-point lead over Kevin Harvick) finishing in the fifth position.

Rounding out the top-ten finishers were: Ryan Newman finishing in the sixth position, Tony Stewart seventh, Clint Bowyer eighth, Mark Martin ninth and Brian Vicker finishing in tenth.
