Formula One Monaco Grand Prix

The course has had some minor changes several times during its history, to improve safety but is still considered the ultimate test of driving skill in Formula One, and if it were not already an existing Grand Prix, it would not be permitted to be added to the schedule for safety reasons.

Monaco is a track where the driver plays a more important role than the power of the car. The course is narrow and dangerous, and overtaking is almost impossible, so qualifying is very important. The only corner that offers a real chance of a passing move is turn 1, Sainte Devote. It is one of the few points with any run-off area and drivers quite often have to use the escape road. Overtaking might also be possible in the Nouvelle chicane after the famous tunnel section, by pressuring the driver in front to make a mistake. The circuit demands a softer set-up than usual and maximum downforce.

One of the most notable features of the course includes the tunnel. The contrast of light and dark as the drivers enter/exit the tunnel are not faced elsewhere. The drivers have to adjust their vision as they emerge from the tunnel at the fastest point of the track and brake for the chicane in the daylight.

Circuit de Monaco Course Fun Facts

The Grand Prix is 78 laps on a 3.340 km (2.075 mi) circuit, which races around the narrow, winding streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine, which includes the famous harbour. It is unique in having been held on the same circuit every time it has been run over such a long period.

Circuit de Monaco is considered the ultimate test of driving skills. It contains both the slowest corner in Formula 1, taken at just 50 km/h, and one of the quickest, taken at 260 km/h. The average speed is very low compared to other F1 circuits. The drivers have to go very close to the Armco barriers all the time and there is no margin for error at all. The cars charge past such landmarks as the Hotel de Paris, the Casino, and then through the tunnel and out around the harbour front.

Did you know that the first race on the famed Circuit de Monaco was held in 1929 and Brazilian great Ayrton Senna has won the most Monaco Grand Prix races with a total of 6 wins?
