Cotto vs. Mayorga Betting Odds
Miguel Cotto vs. Ricardo Mayorga for the WBA Super Welterweight Championship
When: Saturday, March 12, 2011 Where: MGM Grand in Las Vegas
The first major pay-per-view will highlight the battle of two great boxers in the first quarter of the year, that will feature the Pride of Puerto Rico, Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs), will defend his WBA super welterweight championship against colorful, fast-talking ex-title holder, Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KOs), of Managua, Nicaragua, in the main event on "Relentess" on Saturday, March 12, at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 22 knockouts) is the former WBA/ WBC Welterweight champion and the former WBC Junior Middleweight champion. He holds a record of 29-7 with 23 knockouts, along with one draw and a no contest. The 37-year-old Mayorga, returned to the ring after a two year break on Dec. 17, 2010 to score a ninth-round knockout over Michael Walker (19-6-2, 12 KOs) at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida.
Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs), who is the current WBA light middleweight champion, has lost only twice in his professional boxing career. His first loss was against Antonio Margarito during their bloody fight in 2008 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Cotto failed to defend his WBA welterweight title after losing via TKO in the eleventh round.
Cotto's second loss was against Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao on the same venue in 2009, also via TKO in the twelfth and final round. Cotto has not fought since June's ninth-round knockout victory over Yuri Foreman (28-1, 8 KOs), whom he dethroned for his current crown in the first-ever professional fight to be staged at the new Yankee Stadium in New York.
Cotto will go into the fight as a favourite for obvious reasons, and most boxing experts both agree that this should be an easy victory for Cotto, but there could be some fireworks during the opening rounds. Whichever the case, Cotto says Mayorga will be left beaten before the final bell.
Miguel Cotto vs Ricardo Mayorga Fight Results
Cotto fought with discipline for 11 rounds before unleashing a vicious left hook in the 12th round Saturday night that put an exclamation point on his successful defense of his 154-pound title against the wild-swinging Mayorga.
The hook dropped Mayorga to the canvas and he quit a few seconds later, ending an entertaining bout between two boxers trying to resurrect their careers.
"It was a really good fight with an amazing finish," Cotto said.
Cotto was ahead by five points on all three ringside scorecards entering the final round and seemingly headed to a win by decision. But he caught Mayorga in an exchange early in the round and, though Mayorga got up, he told referee Robert Byrd when action resumed that he couldn't go on.
