Where: Las Vegas Motor Speedway - Las Vegas, NV.
Las Vegas will get its only taste of NASCAR Sprint Cup action of the season when the the Kobalt Tools 400 (formerly Shelby 427) cruises to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In 2010, Lowe's and its Kobalt Tools announced a multi-year agreement with Las Vegas Motor Speedway that will make the home-improvement chain's tool brand the official sponsor of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at LVMS.
The NASCAR Weekend will kick off with qualifying for the Kobalt Tools 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Friday, March 10th. The annual Sam's Town 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race is set for Saturday, March 11th and finishes with the Kobalt Tools 400 on March 12, 2012.
As you consider NASCAR odds you may want to remember that the early season results don't mean much at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Just because a driver won in Daytona or Subway Fresh Fit, does not mean they will do well in NASCAR betting odds in Las Vegas. The track is different, the atmosphere is different and there are few guarantees in NASCAR odds in Vegas. For millions of fans from coast to coast, there is nothing quite like race day and the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway sits like a diamond in the desert. One of the most complete racing complexes in the world, its 1,600 acres include road courses, a three-eighths mile oval, a dirt track and a state-of-the-art drag racing facility. Las Vegas Motor Speedway's wide racing surface allows drivers to choose their own preferred racing lanes through turns banked a 12 degrees. The frontstretch tri-oval, which runs 2,275 feet, is banked at 9 degrees. The 1,572-foot-long backstretch is banked three degrees. Las Vegas Motor Speedway is similar to Kansas Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway that offer NASCAR Sprint Cup Series fans the best of big track racing.
Las Vegas Motor Speedway History
Construction on the $200 million complex began in 1995, with crews moving more than 4 million cubic yards of dirt. More than 2,600 light fixtures on more than 200 poles help Las Vegas Motor Speedway keep up with the bright lights of the city it lives in. Nearly 2,000 tons of concrete were originally used to build more than 100,000 seats.
Shortly after Speedway Motorsports Inc. bought the track in 1998, it announced plans to add 22,000 seats in the Dale Earnhardt Tower overlooking the frontstretch.
The first NASCAR race held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was a Truck Series event in 1996. The Nationwide Series held a race there in 1997, and a year later the Cup Series made its first visit with Mark Martin picking up the victory in 1998. Construction of the Richard Petty Terrace in Turn 1 was completed in 2006, allowing fans a shot at 14,000 additional tickets and pushing the track's seating capacity to nearly 150,000.
Additionally, the track saw several major changes in 2006, as the entire surface as reconfigured with progressive banking installed, as well as fan-friendly features in the infield and moving pit road closer to the straightaway. Beginning in 2007, officials made grandstand seating during NASCAR weekend smoke-free.
2011 Kobalt Tools 400 Winner

Carl Edwards back-flipped off his No. 99 Ford race car Sunday for a second time in four years at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Edwards fought off Tony Stewart Sunday to win the Kobalt Tools 400, taking the checkered flag one week after a heart-breaking finish in Phoenix. It's his tradition to black-flip off the driver's side window ledge and onto the track after victories.
Edwards, who in 2008 also won the annual Sprint Cup race in Las Vegas, overtook Stewart for first place with about 20 laps remaining. It was his 19th career win.
2010 Kobalt Tools 500 Results

NASCAR's new era of looser competition — in which drivers are not discouraged to play rough and wreck-inducing overtime finishes are designed to benefit fans — got its biggest test Sunday. The Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway produced an airborne crash, Brad Keselowski calling for Carl Edwards' suspension and a garage littered with twisted sheet metal after two attempts at a green-white-checkered finish.
After a 524-mile race — extended 16 laps beyond its scheduled distance on the 1.54-mile oval — one driver had the win (Kurt Busch, who fended off Matt Kenseth and Juan Pablo Montoya on two furious final restarts) and plenty of others had battered cars and fortunes.
Foremost was Edwards (39th), who met with NASCAR after being parked for rough driving. NASCAR chairman Brian France said before the season that he wanted more of a contact sport, but the bump Edwards' No. 99 Ford (behind by more than 100 laps) delivered to Keselowski's No. 12 Dodge (running in the top 10) on lap 323 probably wasn't what France had in mind.
