Beeghly Center Youngstown, OH
Saturday 12/19/2009
World Middleweight Champion Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik returns home, to Youngstown State University’s Beeghly Center, on Saturday, December 19, to defend his WBC and WBO middleweight titles at Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio. Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs) has not had a fight sense his win over Mexico's Marco Antonio Rubio nine months ago, will be meeting in 29-year-old Espino a fighter who has yet to be stopped as a pro.
Kelly Pavlik (born April 5, 1982) is an American professional boxer. He is The Ring, WBC, and WBO middleweight champion, defeating Jermain Taylor to earn those titles. A native of blue collar Youngstown, Ohio, Pavlik was hailed as perhaps the sport's next matinee idol when he bravely rose from being floored and nearly knocked out in the second round of his seventh-round stoppage of previously, unbeaten and undisputed middleweight champion, Jermain Taylor.
Espino (20-2-1, 9 KOs), from North Hollywood, Calif., was featured in the first season of “The Contender” on NBC. He enters this fight riding a four-year, 11-bout winning streak — the last four by knockout. He returns to the ring after one of his career-best victories, a sixth-round TKO of former two-time world champion Alejandro Garcia in his last fight, successfully defending his WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation middleweight title.
Kelly Pavlik vs. Miguel Espino Fight Results
Kelly Pavlik stopped Miguel Espino in the fifth round Saturday night to defend his middleweight titles, ending a difficult year on a high note.
After a 10-month layoff because of a staph infection on his left hand, the WBC and WBO champ dropped Espino to a knee in the fourth round with staggering rights. Pavlik knocked Espino down again in the fifth, and referee Steve Smoger stepped in at 1:44 into the round.
It was the third successful title defense for Pavlik, who was back in his hometown on the campus of Youngstown State University. Pavlik (36-1, 32 KOs) hadn't fought since beating Marco Antonio Rubio on Feb. 21 across town at the Chevrolet Centre.
Espino (20-3-1) was rated the No. 3 contender by the WBC, though few gave the fighter from North Hollywood, Calif., much of a chance. He was deducted a point for punching after the bell following the first round, then was warned in the second and third for repeated low blows.
