The oldest track still in use today, Indianapolis is a true motor sport institution. Built in 1908, the original track cost $75,000 to build and was originally constructed of crushed stone and tar. Following a spate of accidents however, the decision was taken to replace the surface with bricks: 3.2 million of them to be precise. Thus the legend of 'the brickyard' was born. Each year the Indy 500 crowd grows as spectators from all over the world come together for a weekend of intense racing action!

Borg-Warner Trophy

The Borg-Warner Trophy, one of the most recognizable trophies in all of sports, has been awarded to the winner of every Indianapolis 500-Mile Race since 1936. Crafted out of sterling silver by Spaulding-Gorham of Chicago, it was unveiled at a dinner in New York in February 1936, featuring bas-relief sculptures of every “500” winner up until that time. The new winner has been added every year since, and in 1986 (the trophy’s 50th anniversary), the final space became filled.

The solution for 1987 was to add a base, but this too became filled, and in 2004, an even larger version replaced it, this one with enough spaces to last through 2034. The only sculptured face not of a winning driver is that of the late Speedway owner Tony Hulman, whose likeness, in gold, was placed on the base in 1987.

2011 Indianapolis 500 winner

2011 Indianapolis 500 WinnerAfter finishing second in the last two Indianapolis 500s, Dan Wheldon crossed the finish line when rookie J.R. Hildebrand crashed into the wall on the final turn. While Hildebrand was able to get his car past the line, Wheldon was able to overtake him and capture his second Indy 500 victory, having won the 2005 race. Hildebrand finished second and Graham Rahal, who started 29th, finished third.

Hildebrand entered the final lap having passed Bertrand Baguette for the lead. Danica Patrick crept into the top 10 late in the race and held the lead ever so briefly before she needed to head to the pit.

Wheldon hails from England, but he raced in a car that was decorated in commemoration of Ronald Reagan's centennial birth date.

2010 Indianapolis 500 winner

So dominating was Dario Franchitti in Sunday's Indianapolis 500 that it was easy to overlook his expert fuel-saving strategy that closed the deal.

Running fifth with 25 laps left, Franchitti waited as Mike Conway, Justin Wilson, Helio Castroneves and Graham Rahal took turns pitting for ethanol, clearing the way for his No. 10 Dallara/Honda to take the lead from Castroneves with eight laps remaining, needing only to conserve fuel for his second Indy victory in four years. There was no doubt he could do it as he nursed his car through the final laps before a final caution clinched his second victory in four years with an estimated 1.6 gallons left.

Unlike his rain-shortened 2007 victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Franchitti had mostly sunny skies above while the wicked car beneath him provided clear track ahead from the first lap, when he passed Will Power in the first turn and then pole-sitter Helio Castroneves.

2009 Indianapolis 500 winner

Helio Castroneves shed tears of relief April 17 outside a Miami courthouse after being acquitted of federal tax evasion charges that threatened to - at the least -- curtail his racing career. On May 9 - a day before his 34th birthday - Castroneves was overcome by emotion again after winning the pole position for the Indianapolis 500.

"Incredible," shouted Castroneves, who put an exclamation point on a stellar Month of May - by him and the No. 3 Team Penske crew - by winning his third 500-Mile Race by 1.9819 seconds over 2005 champion Dan Wheldon. Danica Patrick finished a career-best third in "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."

Castroneves' month, which included the pole win and his crew winning the pit stop competition (the first sweep since Buddy Rice in 2004), was punctuated by the Hollywood ending. Somewhere, there's a gaggle of screen writers feverishly working on the script.

Scott Dixon wins Indy 500Scott Dixon wins Indy 500

Sunday was an Indianapolis 500 the way we all remember it. Well, those of us old enough to remember when so many things made this event special.

A giant crowd, clearly the biggest in a decade. Tempers flaring, almost A.J. Foyt style, among several contending drivers, including Danica. Unexpected moments and wild crashes, but thankfully, no one hurt. Tears of disappointment from one driver. And the race favorite holding off the little-team underdog in the final laps.

New Zealand's Scott Dixon will go in the books as the first Indy 500 winner of the new era, the return of one unified series for American open-wheel racing.

91st Indy 500 Race Results

Dario Franchitti Indy 500 WinnerDario Franchitti became the second Scotsman to win the Indianapolis 500, claiming victory in a rain-shortened 91st running of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."

The Andretti Green Racing driver, who joins Jim Clark as the only Scottish drivers to win the race, inherited the lead on Lap 155 when teammate Tony Kanaan pitted, and the No. 27 Canadian Club Dallara / Honda / Firestone splashed across the finish line under the yellow / checkered flag combination on Lap 166 as rain doused the cavernous facility.

"Who would have thought it?" said Franchitti, whose rain-soaked firesuit didn't dampen his enthusiasm as he chugged the traditional winner's bottle of milk in Victory Circle. "I can't believe it. It's the Indianapolis 500."
