2011 Heluva Good Results

Denny Hamlin held off a charging Matt Kenseth in a five-lap shoot-out to win the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 today at Michigan International Speedway.

Kenseth tried to pass Hamlin on the final lap, going inside through turn three and almost losing control of his car. Kenseth held on for second place.

Kyle Busch crossed the line in third; Paul Menard was fourth. Carl Edwards, who won Saturday's Nationwide race, was fifth.

Hamlin, who won the race last year, had the lead coming off of pit road with five laps to go. Dale Earnhardt Jr. went into the wall on lap 192, bringing out the final caution of the 200 lap race. 

When the green flag dropped with five laps left to go, Hamlin and Kenseth pulled away from the rest of the field, setting up a two car battle for the win.

2010 Heluva Good Results

Juan Pablo Montoya climbed out of his Chevrolet and into a sea of red and white uniforms. Earnhardt Ganassi Racing crewmembers turned the Watkins Glen International straightaway into a receiving line, offering hearty pats on the shoulder and enthusiastic high-fives to the winner of the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen.

This wasn't merely the exuberant celebration of a Sprint Cup driver who had ended a 113-race winless drought.

The oft-swashbuckling Colombian had plenty to strut about Sunday, leading a race-high 74 of 90 laps in scoring his second career victory in NASCAR's premier series.

But from the time he crossed the finish line a dominant 4.735 seconds ahead of Kurt Busch, the frequent swagger was replaced by a contriteness not often seen from the man who has Indianapolis 500 and Formula One wins on his résumé.

"Good job, guys," Montoya radioed his team in subdued voice. "Sorry about last week again."

It was a testy exchange with crew chief Brian Pattie on Aug. 1 that had left the team teetering, but the dissension stemmed from much earlier events.

After leading the most laps at the Brickyard 400 for the second consecutive season, a late call for four tires cost him a shot at victory two weeks ago. It was a frustrating refrain for Montoya, who led 12 of 21 races without a win this year prior to Sunday.
