Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Jorge Solis
Gamboa has a lot on stake in this matchup. If he wins, he has a future showdown against Puerto Rican star Juan Manual Lopez (30-0, 27 KO), which will be defending his WBO featherweight title, on April 16.
Yuriorkis Gamboa, at the age of 29, has over 250 amateur bouts under his belt and a 2004 Olympic gold medal at flyweight (112 pounds). Gamboa, is coming off of September's unanimous decision victory over Orlando Salido (34-10-2, 22 KOs) that earned him the IBF crown. Gamboa has a lot on stake in this matchup. If he wins, he has a future showdown against Puerto Rican star Juan Manual Lopez (30-0, 27 KO), which will be defending his WBO featherweight title, on April 16. But first, he will be tested by Solis, who has 29 knockouts in 40 victories.
Last 5 Fights: Gamboa has been on a streak of 5 straight featherweight title fights, including notable victories over Orlando Salido, Jonathan Victor Barros, and Rogers Mtagwa. These were all solid, well-established fighters, but none of them has anywhere near the talent that Gamboa has. Gamboa is hoping that Solis can be nothing more than another solid fighter that he decisively beats en route to a fight against Lopez.
The 31-year-old Solis has won three straight fights, two of them by knockout, since losing a July, unanimous decision to Cristobal Cruz during failed bid to earn the IBF's featherweight belt.
Solis is coming off of September's sixth-round knockout of Francisco Codero for the his present crown, this, against a fighter who entered the match with a record of 23-0 that included 15 stoppages.
Last 5 Fights: Since defeating Likar Ramos in February of 2010, he has successfully defended his interim WBA Super Featherweight title twice and looks to add another title to his resume when he drops down a weight class to fight Gamboa at the Featherweight division. One glaring question in his recent fights stems from his one sided July 2009 loss to Cristobal Cruz. If he can’t take Cristobal Cruz, how is he supposed to defeat a fighter as explosive and dynamic as Gamboa?
Miguel Angel Garcia Vs. Matt Remillard
The 23-year-old Garcia is coming off of his second straight knockout with a Dec. 4, fifth-round stoppage of Olivier Lontchi (18-2-2, eight KOs) of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, who was twice floored in the final round.
The 24-year-old Remillard is coming off of November's eight-round, unanimous decision over Oscar Cuero, and has scored six knockouts in his past night victories.
Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Jorge Solis Boxing Results
Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0, 16 KOs) knocked out Jorge Solis (40-3-2-1, 29 KOs) in the fourth round . One of the fastest-rising fighters in the sport, Gamboa, 29, needed just four rounds to finish off Solis, who went eight rounds with Manny Pacquiao four years ago.
The pair felt each other out in the opening round, as Gamboa feinted his right hand, looking to set-up Solis, 125½, for power shots later. In the next round, he did just that, dropping his foe twice. The first knockdown came from a straight left. The second, from a barrage of power shots.
Moments after the fourth round began, Gamboa dropped him for the fourth time, a vicious straight right doing the damage. Solis, 31, again made it to his feet, but the end was near, as Gamboa jumped on him and closed the show, dropping Solis for a fifth and final time, as referee David Fields saved the Mexican from further punishment.
