Where: Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas, NV
Bet on the 12-round IBF/WBA World featherweight title fight on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In the first co-feature, Yuriorkis Gamboa, the current WBA “Regular” Featherweight Champion will be taking on Orlando Salido, the IBF Champion who stepped in to replace Gamboa’s original opponent, Elio Rojas (the WBC Champion) who suffered a shoulder injury while training.
Gamboa vs. Salido had origially been scheduled to unify their titles on HBO on July 24, but Salido suffered a cut in his split-decision, title-winning effort against Cristobal Cruz on May 15.
Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Orlando Salido
The 28-year-old former Olympian and all-out superb amateur who has lit up the 126-pound weight class with his electric style of fighting, is currently 18-0(15) and a champion since April of last year, Gamboa will be a big favourite to win on September 11th. Salido, a year older at age 29 and currently 34-10-2(22) is a fighter Gamboa and his team have referred to as "slow" and the IBF champ is no big puncher. Without a doubt, it would be one big, big upset if the man known as "Siri" were to derail the Cuban express.
Yuriorkis Gamboa, definitely appears to be in his prime. After winning the Interim WBA Title with a win over Jose Rojas, Gamboa has been defending his title successfully, with one-sided victories over Whyber Garcia, Rogers Mtagwa and most recently, a decision victory over Jonathan Victor Barros. With his recent performances, Gamboa is on pace to become a super champion, and unifying the WBA belt with the IBF belt would definitely help this.
Orlando Salido: In his most recent victory, a split decision win over Cristobal Cruz, Salido captured the IBF title and has rarely been stopped recently aside from in his first fight against Cruz. Although Salido has been solid in his recent fights, he will be facing a fighter in his prime and it may be tough for him to adjust, given the lower level caliber of fighters he’s been facing recently.
Also appearing on the same card is the WBA Lightweight title eliminator featuring Anthony Peterson and Brandon Rios: two young, talented, and unbeaten fighters with bright futures ahead of them who will be sure to put on a great fight for this Las Vegas crowd.
Yuriorkis Gamboa vs Orlando Salido Results
Late last night at the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, undefeated WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa defeated gritty Mexican Orlando Salido over twelve rounds in a unification bout. During the fight Gamboa showed his trademark speed and quickness while also being tagged and dropped in the process, which has also seemed to become a custom of his from time to time.
Gamboa controlled the action round after round as the talent difference between the two fighters was striking early on. Salido was game but didn’t have the firepower or the overall ability to mount a serious attack. Gamboa seemed to be in cruise control as rounds four and five pressed forward before becoming rejuvenated mid-way through.
