This game originated as the Tangerine Bowl in 1947, with sponsorship from the Florida Department of Citrus. The first game in January 1947
was between Catawba College and Maryville College. Catawba won (31-6) Each team received $3,500 and the Elks Children's Hospital received a
donation of $2,736.75. The Tangerine Bowl changed its name in 1983 to the Citrus Bowl. The Citrus Bowl is the seventh oldest college football
bowl game in the U.S. Until 1983 the primary charity was the Elks clubs hospitals. CompUSA was a sponsor from 1992 through 2002. The bowl is
currently sponsored by Capital One. It matches teams from the SEC and the Big 10.
The Florida Citrus Bowl can hold up to 70,000 fans and is home to two annual bowl games, the Mazda Tangerine Bowl and the Capital One Bowl.
Several expansions and improvements over the years includes a state of the art playing field, disabled access and new escalator system for
easier accessibility to seating.
At the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium you will find all kinds of events, from nationwide college football bowls to rock 'n roll concerts with
the biggest names in the world. Sportswise, the stadium is home to the annual Captial One Bowl, Tangerine Bowl, Walt Disney World Florida
Classic and University of Central Florida football. These NCAA football contests fill up the stadium to its capacity, with nearly 70,000
people rooting on their alma maters. This facility has greatly expanded over the years since it was built all the way back in 1936. It's a
great stadium to catch the biggest names and the biggest games in our world today.
Modifications: The stadium was built to seat approximately 8,900 people. Over the years there has been a series of additions in seating
capacity and other facilities. In 1952 the stadium was expanded to around 12,000 seats. In 1968 that increased to around 18,000 and in 1976
a major expansion took place that added the first upper sections to the stadium and increased the seating to around 52,000. Another major
expansion increased the seating to 70,000 in 1989, costing $38 million. In addition to the new seats, the expansion included building new
structures connected with the stadium for better crowd movement, an additional disabled elevator; additional disabled seating, electrical
and phone upgrades and a state-of-the-art playing field. Within the last couple years new escalator systems were installed for better
accessibility to upper bowl seating.
