Del Mar Horse Racing The historic track overlooking the Pacific Ocean opens for its 71st season on Wednesday, July 18th, with a action packed 37-day meeting that runs until September 5th, 2012. More than $22 million in purses will be distributed during the meeting, more than $6 million in stakes races. The traditional opening day feature on Wednesday is the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes, a restricted stake for three year olds contested at 1 1/6 miles on the turf course. The following Saturday will feature the first graded stake of the meeting, the $350,000 Eddie Read Stakes ( G1 ) for three year olds and upward contested at nine furlongs on the turf course.

Racing at the meet has been reduced from six days a week to five this year, running Wednesday through Sunday. Post time is 2:00 pacific time with the exception of Friday, with a 3:00 first post.

Del Mar Race Track History

Del Mar is nationally known for its racetrack and ever-popular thoroughbred-racing season from mid-July through early September. The Del Mar track opened in 1937, with Bing Crosby opening its gates and sence then it has been famous for the slogan: "Where The Turf Meets The Surf."
