World champion Antonio "Magic Man" Tarver, (27-4, 19 KOs) and undefeated "Bad" Chad Dawson, (26-0, 17 KOs), will face off in a battle of light heavyweight kingpins on Saturday, Oct. 11 live on Showtime Championship Boxing at 9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast. Antonio Tarver, a southpaw outboxed and beat light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods from Sheffield, England by 12-round UD on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at St Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida. Tarver retained his IBO light heavyweight title successfully defending it for the second time and captured Woods' IBF light heavyweight title.
Tarver will now, fight challenger Chad Dawson in an IBF and IBO light heavyweight title fight on October 11th on Showtime. This will be Tarver's first IBF title defense and his third IBO title defense.
On the same night Tarver was dethroning Woods, Dawson successfully defended his WBC title against the hard-hitting and aggressive Glen Johnson. Albeit a difficult fight for the young champion, Dawson won the unanimous decision and showed his mettle against a heavy-handed adversary.
Dawson, of New Haven, CT, is out to prove that he is the man to be at light heavyweight. A ShoBox alum with speed, coordination and power, Dawson is considered by most industry insiders to be the next star of the star-studded division. The bout will determine supremacy at 175 as well as determine whether Dawson is an elite talent.
The SHOWTIME telecast will open with arguably the most significant world heavyweight championship fight in years. Active World Boxing Council (WBC) Heavyweight Champion Sam Peter (30-1, 23 KOs) will defend his title against WBC Champion Emeritus Vitali Klitschko (35-2, 34 KOs), who will make his dramatic return to the ring after a nearly four-year absence, on a same-day tape delay from the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany.

Antonio Tarver, prior to becoming a professional boxer had an impressive amateur career winning the 1994 National Golden Gloves Light Heavyweight champion, 1995 World Amateur Boxing Championships and 1996 Olympics Light Heavyweight bronze medal.
On Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada in Tarver-Jones II, Tarver became the first man to ever knockout Roy Jones Jr. Only once in 50 previous fights had Jones been sent to the canvas and he had never lost a fight by KO.
In 2006 Tarver starred in Rocky Balboa aka Rocky VI as the heavyweight division champion Mason "The Line" Dixon. The primary opponent of fictional boxer Rocky Balboa based on Chuck Wepner who inspired Sylvester Stallone to write the Rocky movies.
Tarver, after losing a 12-round UD to Bernard Hopkins on Saturday, June 9, 2006 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey did not fight for a year. Then on Saturday, June 9, 2007 in Hartford, Connecticut, Tarver shook off the ring rust winning a 12-round MD over Elvir "The Kosovo Kid" Muriqi plus the vacant IBO light heavyweight title. In his next fight on Saturday, December 1, 2007, at Foxwoods Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut, Tarver retained his IBO light heavyweight title scoring a 4th round KO over Danny Santiago.
Tarver-Dawson will be promoted by AT Entertainment and Gary Shaw Productions in association with Palms Casino Resort Las Vegas. Peter-Klitschko will be co-promoted by Duva Boxing, K2 Promotions and Don King Productions.
Chad Dawson claims light-heavyweight crown with victory over Antonio Tarver
Unbeaten Chad Dawson did his talking in the ring, seizing Antonio Tarver’s International Boxing Federation light heavyweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision. Dawson, 26, improved to 27-0 with 17 knockouts, knocking down the 39-year-old champion in the 12th round en route to a dominant victory. Two of the ringside judges scored the bout 117-110 while a third saw it 118-109 for Dawson, who displayed more speed and power than Tarver.
Tarver, who had captured a share of the light heavyweight crown for the third time on April 12 with a unanimous decision over Clinton Woods, had loudly proclaimed his superiority in the run-up to the fight.
In fact, Dawson claimed his second world title, having given up the World Boxing Council light heavyweight belt in July after three successful defenses in order to fight Tarver.
After close early rounds, Dawson began to build his lead, setting a punishing pace and scoring with right jabs and solid lefts.
