Former WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (34-2, 27 KO’s) of Caguas, Puerto Rico and undefeated WBA 154 pound champion Yuri Foreman (28-0-0, 8 KOs) of Brooklyn,New York on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Yankee Stadium. Cotto has fought Joshua Clottey (2009), Zab Judah (2007), Paulie Malignaggi (2006), and Muhammad Abdullaev (2005) in the month of June in recent years.
The fight will be contested for Foreman's WBA World light middleweight title. Yuri Foreman, 28-0, 8 KO’s, is coming off an impressive 12-round decision over Daniel Santos (32-4-1, 23 KOs) as a 2-1 underdog to capture the W.B.A title on November 14, 2009, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Miguel Cotto is on the comeback trail as he tries to reclaim a portion of the welterweight title. Miguel Cotto, fighting before a nationalistic and electrified crowd of supporters waving Puerto Rican flags, stopped WBA super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman, who had his own sizable Jewish cheering section, with a crushing body shot that dropped the champion at 42 seconds of the ninth round, and referee Arthur Mercante Jr. stopped it. With his new title, Cotto became a four-time world champion, in his third weight division.
But Cotto thought he had won the fight in the previous round when Foreman's trainer, Joe Grier, threw in the towel after his fighter, limping badly, had injured his knee. The fight appeared stopped in that eighth round, the ring filled with people and Cotto celebrated his return as a champion.
