In his way that night is Danish boxer Mikkel Kessler. Kessler tells the BBC Sport UK that Joe Calzaghe is in for a surprise when they meet in the ring.

Calzaghe will be roared on by a vociferous Welsh crowd at the Millenium Stadium and Kessler will need all his heavy hitting and craft to defeat Calzaghe but the 'Italian Dragon' is a very experienced fighter and can mix it up.

Calzaghe has compiled one of the most impressive resumes in boxing but his critics have consistently maintained that he has dodged tough fights. Indeed he has pulled out of numerous bouts because of injuries but his complete domination of Jeff Lacy in 2006 proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the long time reigning champion was legitimate.

Kessler is by far Calzaghe’s toughest challenger. Despite the fact that Calzaghe went into his bout against Lacy as an underdog, most die hard fans and media scribes knew that the champion would bust up his green challenger. Kessler is a completely different package. The man can fight and Calzaghe knows it. The heavily tattooed Kessler presents all sorts of dilemmas for the long time pound for pound resident. He’s big, technically sound and hits with sledge hammer fists.

The "Viking Warrior" is 27 years old compared to Calzaghe's 35. Kessler's ko percentage is a handsome 76%, while Calzaghe's is just as impressive at 74%. Yet the fact still remains, Kessler may be peaking while Joe has already reached and possibly passed his. If so, this could spell trouble for the "Italian Dragon."

Kessler captured his WBA title in 2004 against Manny Siaca and added the WBC title after a dramatic third-round knockout of Markus Beyer, last October. “The Viking Warrior” has fought most of his matches in his home country of Denmark.

Kessler has been working towards a unification fight with Calzaghe for nearly two years and is happy that his opportunity has finally arrived.

Calzaghe will be looking to further himself from the other contenders in what is sure to be an exhilarating night in Cardiff. Don’t miss out on betting one of the true greats of British boxing, get your Joe Calzaghe vs Mikkel Kessler odds here.

Joe Calzaghe Vs. Mikkel Kessler Results

Calzaghe - kesslerCalzaghe-Kessler brought a massive 50,150 people to Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. They roared, and Calzaghe reacted, throwing 1,010 punches over 12 rounds, boxing in a high gear with energy that carried through into his post-fight interview. One thing stood out in Calzaghe’s conversation with HBO analyst Max Kellerman: his desire to step up seven pounds and challenge the man holding the “Ring Magazine” championship belt.

The 35-year-old Welshman, roared on by a huge crowd in the Millennium Stadium, was taken the distance but proved a class above anybody the previously unbeaten Kessler had fought before.

In defending his WBO title for the 21st time, spanning 10 years, Calzaghe walked off with the 28-year-old's WBA and WBC belts to prove beyond doubt that he is the undisputed king of the 12 stone division.

Afterwards, flanked by his father and trainer Enzo and his young son, Calzaghe said he wanted to step up to light-heavyweight and fight American Bernard Hopkins.

The fight, which started at 01.30 local time because of American television demands, totally lived up to the hype as around 45,000 spectators watched every shuddering blow.

Kessler, fighting outside Denmark for only the third time as a professional, was booed as he walked in but by the end he had earned the respect of a partisan crowd.

The Dane, who had won all his 39 fights, refused to be intimidated and landed crisp left hands in the opening rounds. Calzaghe was stung by a big right in the second, although he landed plenty of telling shots of his own.

Kessler stumbled in the third, leading to a furious Calzaghe attack that produced one savage right upper-cut that made the chiselled Dane flinch. Kessler hit back in round four with a few crunching blows.

The pace was relentless through the middle rounds but Calzaghe began to exert control with his ability to fire off rapid successions of punches from range. The 28-year-old Kessler was always dangerous, though.

Occasionally, Calzaghe got sucked into furious close quarters combat but when he lined up his opponent he looked a class act. One body shot shook up Kessler in the eighth and he finally had a fading opponent back-pedalling in rounds nine, 10 and 11.
