The Open Championship is to return to Royal Birkdale from July 17-20, 2008. It will be the ninth Championship to be played over the Lancashire course where Peter Thomson won the first and last of his five Open titles and where Arnold Palmer's victory in 1961 marked the virtual re-birth of golf's oldest championship. British Open 2004 Results
The British Open Golf Championship will be played over Royal Troon Golf Club, Troon, Ayrshire, Scotland will host the 133rd Open Championship in 2004 from the 15th - 18th July.
The Open will return to Royal Troon Golf Course in Ayrshire on Scotland's west coast in 2004. The oldest of the four major championships, the "British Open." Last played here in 1997 when Justin Leonard won his first Open Championship. The Troon has been the host to a list of champions who have triumphed at this classic venue. Through the years there have been many memorable duels over Britain's famous links - none more so than the Nicklaus v Watson battle at Turnberry in 1977. Since then its roll call of winners includes, Bobby Locke, Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf, Tom Watson, Mark Calcavecchia & Justin Leonard. The Royal Troon was also the scene of the first four-hole play-off in Open history, when Mark Calcavecchia defeated Wayne Grady and Greg Norman in 1989.
When the 133rd Open returns to Royal Troon, it will be the 8th time the competition has been played on the course. The first was held here in 1923, Arthur Havers who finished fourth the previous year at St. Andrews, was to come out on top this year.
