2008 Breeders Cup Contenders 2008 Breeders Cup track odds

In a short time, the Breeders' Cup has been firmly established as Thoroughbred racing's most prestigious event. Nothing can rival its millions in prize money or its international cast of talent, except for the yearly triple crown races. No other day of racing can match the Breeders' Cup Championship for non stop excitement.

The Breeders' Cup Championship has provided racing with some of its finest moments. Images like these are indelibly etched in its rich chronicles: the great Cigar ending his perfect 1995 season with a thrilling victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic; Personal Ensign courageously inching past Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors to retire undefeated in 1988; Arazi swooping in from France and stunning all who saw him in the 1991 Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

The Breeders' Cup today, remains the definitive test of champions and has become racing's most recognizable and successful showpiece. The Breeders' Cup Championship has redefined the racing calendar - becoming the season-ending goal for the best horses - and given the sport a championship event much like the World Series or the Super Bowl.

But the Breeders' Cup Championship is known beyond the borders of the particular host track. NBC has televised the event since its inception, providing a degree of air time unprecedented in Thoroughbred racing. The network's coverage has won Eclipse Awards for National Television Achievement and the Outstanding Live Sports Special of 1992 at the 14th EmmyAwards for Sports annual ceremony.

Selection process

All Breeders' Cup fields are limited to 14 runners. If more than 14 are pre-entered, Breeders' Cup officials use a two-part selection system to decide which horses will be allowed to compete. The first seven runners earn automatic berths based on the points they have earned in American graded stakes races then a panel of racing directors and secretaries choose the next seven entrants.

Through 2006, there were eight races on the Breeders' Cup card, all classified as Grade I races. In 2007, three races Dirt Mile, Filly and Mare Turf, and Juvenile Turf were added, all of them run the Friday before the remaining eight races. Three more new races a Turf Sprint, Juvenile Filly Turf and Dirt Marathon were also added for 2008.

Santa Anita Park

Santa Anita occupies approximately 320 acres. Its landmark, 1,100-foot-long Grandstand seats 26,000 guests. The giant Infield area accommodates many thousands more. Behind the scenes are 61 barns, capable of housing more than 2,000 horses and a complete equine hospital.

2007 Breeders' Cup Results

Curlin Breeders WinnerThis was the 24th Breeders' Cup. Champions were crowned, pretenders were exposed, handicappers made memorable scores or went home broke and everybody got wet.

After two months of dry, unseasonably warm weather, clouds rolled in Wednesday and never left. They dumped 2½ inches of rain that turned the main track into muck. Only on Breeders' Cup day would grass racing have been conducted in North America on such a saturated surface.

After the 2 minutes of horse racing excitment, a mud-splattered Robby Albarado grinned as a blanket of purple and yellow flowers was draped over Classic hero Curlin.

Making a persuasive case for Horse of the Year, Curlin also won the Jockey Club Gold Cup and Preakness (both gr. I) this year. He has won six of his nine starts and has never finished out of the money. The Classic victory, worth $2.7 million, increased Curlin's lifetime earnings to $5,102,800 just this year, not bad for any horse, let alone one who sold for just $57,000 as a yearling.

Curlin paid $10.80, $5,20, and $4.20 while Hard Spun paid $7.60 and $5.80. Awesome Gem, a 28-1 shot, returned $9.40 for the show. The exacta paid $70.80, while the $1 trifecta paid $645.30. Past years Breeder's Cup results and information Click Here!
