Formula One teams visit Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, August 31st to Sept. 2nd 2012, and the track is one of the most fearsome circuits that the drivers have to drive upon all season long.
The Belgian Grand Prix is an automobile race, part of the Formula One World Championship. The very first Le Mans 24 Hour race was held in 1923 and was such a huge success that neighbouring Belgium wanted to get in on the action. They decided to hold a similar 24 hour endurance event in 1924 and used a circuit that consisted of superfast public roads between the three towns of Francorchamps, Rivage and Burnenville. It was a fast course and until 2000 it was possible to travel over the track as it was a public road. Spa was missing from the F1 calendar until 1983 when it returned with a drastically reduced circuit of almost 4.5miles. Despite the cuts in length the circuit still managed to retain its magic.

One of the most challenging Grand Prix in the world, and to prove that fact only six drivers have managed to win the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa more than twice: Juan Manual Fangio and Damon Hill both have three wins to their name, Jim Clark and Kimi Raikkonen managed one better with four wins and Ayrton Senna won the race five times. The undisputed Spa master though, is Michael Schumacher who has won a record six times.

The whole Spa Francorchamps track presents a massive challenge with a number of corners that are taken near top speed. The first corner of the track runs on an ex-public road just a few hundred metres from the small rural village of Francorchamps, before spreading out through two other towns. Turns five, six and seven is where the chance of crashes in the Belgian Grand Prix increase again because this is a severe chicane which will be tackled at high speed and turn eight is also dangerous because it comes back on itself, much like the first corner. Many drivers lost their lives on the dangerous circuit, one tragically being killed after he spun off and struck a rock monument that had been placed there for another driver who had been killed at the same place.
