2009 BCS National Championship Game Results
January 8, 2009 Florida Gators 24, Oklahoma Sooners 14
As Florida quarterback Tim Tebow ran off the field near the end of the third quarter against Oklahoma in the Bowl Championship Series title game Thursday night, the right shoulder of his white jersey was tattooed with many grass stains. He looked more like himself as he motioned to his sideline with arm pumps and primal screams.
Finally, the Gators offense had come to life. Soon, Florida took hold of the game in the same way safety Ahmad Black grabbed the ball from Oklahoma wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias on the key defensive play of the game in the fourth quarter.
The Gators seized the moment and thus the national championship, beating Oklahoma 24-14 in front of an orange and blue dominated crowd of 78,468 at Dolphin Stadium. It is Florida's second national title in three years and third in school history.
2008 BCS National Championship Game Results
January 7, 2008 LSU 38, Ohio State 24
LSU won its second BCS championship game in four years with a convincing 38-24 dispatch of Ohio State at the Superdome.
LSU just won the school's second national championship in five years, 38-24 over those same Ohio State Punchlines. End of split national championship discussion. For the first time in 47 years a team with two regular-season losses won it all. In a season that was a chase to see who could be the best of the mediocre, LSU was the last comic standing. The joke, back on Nov. 23, was that the Tigers had a chance in hell of being here. Now there is no doubt, despite the season ending with eight other BCS conference teams having two losses.
This time the final score was healthy-and-loaded LSU 38, in-over-its-head Ohio State 24. And it wasn't that close. Once again, the Bucks got their fans excited by scoring early -- ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown last season, jumped out 10-0 this time.
Buckeyes weren't ready for what LSU threw at them. Not ready to win the battle in the trenches, not ready to match speed on the perimeter, not ready to calmly and smartly execute under a mountain of pressure.
Combine that lack of toughening with vivid memories of the destruction in the desert against Florida and you know why so many of us were concerned about Ohio State's fitness for this battle. Especially if you saw a fully loaded LSU from earlier in the season, before the SEC wars began wearing it down.
2007 BCS National Championship Game Results
January 8, 2007 Florida 41, Ohio State 14
The Florida Gators ran away with college football's national championship. When they defeated Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and No. 1 Ohio State on Monday night with a easy victory over the buckeyes, 41-14. Florida's amazingly easy victory left the Gators and the Buckeyes with identical 13-1 records and, with Wisconsin and Louisville also losing just once, almost surely will renew calls for a playoff system.
