Miami Hurricanes: -6.5
The Illini just played in an absolutely amazing game against the Colorado Buffaloes. Illinois looked like a slam dunk to beat the college basketball betting odds at halftime when it was up 16 against the Buffs, but it ended up not scoring a single field goal in the first 11+ minutes of the second half to let them back in it.
The Illini were fortunate to get back in the game and ultimately win in spite of the fact that they only ended up making three field goals in the entire second half.
Head Coach John Groce kept trying to push the tempo of the game, but every time that the Illini got stuck in half court sets, it felt like either G Brandon Paul or G DJ Richardson was jacking up a three-point shot.
That's all fine and dandy if you're a team that lives and dies by the three thanks to a lack of superior talent. Those teams don't ultimately win the NCAA Tournament though, and that's the ultimate goal for the Illini right now.
Beating the college basketball gambling odds is tough enough against the Hurricanes. They won the ACC this year, and they arguably have one of the most purely talented collegiate teams in America. The combination of the bigs in the paint and the NBA-caliber guards is just really tough to beat.
If you look back at the box score in the game against the Pacific Tigers, your first instinct has to be that there is so much more that these Hurricanes could have done in that one.
F Julian Gamble, F Kenny Kadji, and C Reggie Johnson only combined for 18 points, and G Shane Larkin only had 10. But that in itself is what makes this team so scary. The Canes can beat the college basketball wagering odds by a ton of points without even playing up to their fullest potential.
Free Pick – The Illini were really fortunate to survive against Colorado on Friday, and they showed us in that game that they don't have the goods to keep up with Miami.
The Hurricanes are just far too good of a team to lose to a club that literally only has one way of beating it. Sure, if Illinois could figure out how to hit 50-60% of its threes, it'll win this game.
Seeing how it is a lot more likely to see the Illini hit 20% than 50% from long range, we have no choice but to lay the lumber with the Canes.
