NASCAR AARON'S 499:
Kyle Busch wins under caution at Talladega
TALLADEGA -- Denny Hamlin appeared to have a difficult decision ahead during the final lap of the Aaron's 499 Sunday.
Busch took the lead with three laps to go then held off a number of challenges to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Aaron's 499 on the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Ala.
Prior to Sunday, Talladega had been a track that befuddled the talented young driver. In his six previous starts here, Busch had never cracked the top 10, and only once had he finished inside the top 30 -- during the fall race of 2006.
1. (5) Kyle Busch, Toyota, 188 laps, 90.8 rating, 190 points, $321,400.
2. (26) Juan Pablo Montoya, Dodge, 188, 102.9, 175, $235,233.
3. (7) Denny Hamlin, Toyota, 188, 125.0, 170, $203,491.
4. (6) David Ragan, Ford, 188, 114.3, 160, $152,775.
5. (8) Brian Vickers, Toyota, 188, 90.6, 160, $122,375.

Jeff Gordon Scores Talladega Victory
Jeff Gordon lead lap one by himself but they were all two-by-two behind him.
Sterling Marlin lead lap two as they stacked up three-by-three behind him.
Talladega's classic restrictor plate racing was in full effect as the lead pack was a mess. Three and four wide all the way back through the pack. The lead changed hands many times over the early laps as nobody was content to settle into line until after the first round of green-flag pit stops.
Jeff Gordon won this race and passed Dale Earnhardt on the all-time NASCAR wins list at 77. After he crossed the checkered flag, some spectators threw bottles, cans, and even toilet paper at the #24 car Gordon drove for Hendrick Motorsports. As a result of this incident, in spite of warnings before the race by NASCAR and organizers, a total of 14 people were arrested, and Talladega management revoked their ticket buying privlidges. However, a loophole was discovered that would allow these "banned" fans could buy tickets from a third party ticket broker (such as StubHub.com). The rest of the race's top five finishers saw Jimmie Johnson ending up in second place, followed by Kurt Busch, David Gilliland, and Jamie McMurray in that order.
The race ended with an aborted green-white-checkered finish. Several cars were involved, including Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, McMurray, and Gilliland. Harvick and McMurray were later fined $25,000 and placed on probation for their actions during this accident.[1] The finish had been triggered by an engine failure in the #00 car driven by David Reutimann.

Just another manic Monday
TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Almost every move Jimmie Johnson made at Talladega Superspeedway seemed to be the wrong one.
Rivals said he was too aggressive, showed too little patience. Dale Earnhardt Jr. even called him an "idiot'' for his role in accidents that wrecked 39 cars last year.
Johnson took the criticism, then tried to learn from his mistakes.
Boy, has he ever.
Johnson erased a career full of Talladega troubles, barreling past teammate Brian Vickers with one lap to go and holding off a charge from Tony Stewart to win the rain-postponed Aaron's 499 on Monday.

Gordon dominates at 'Dega
TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) -- Jeff Gordon proved again he is NASCAR's new king of restrictor-plate racing.
Gordon fought off challenger after challenger Sunday and had to go to overtime to win the Aaron's 499 Nextel Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway.
It was Gordon's fourth victory in the last five races at Talladega and Daytona, the only tracks at which NASCAR requires the horsepower-sapping plates to slow the cars.
The four-time Cup champion led a dominating 139 of the 194 laps on the 2.66-mile oval. He finally held off Tony Stewart and Michael Waltrip at the end of a two-lap shootout, which was set up by a six-car crash with one lap remaining in regulation that ended the chances of fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Jeff Gordon is the defending champ.
TALLADEGA, Ala. Jeff Gordon took
the lead from Dale Earnhardt Jr. with six laps remaining and
barely beat him in a controversial finish Sunday, ending DEI's
winning streak at Talladega Superspeedway.
With Earnhardt Jr. making a
strong move to pass for the lead coming off turn four on lap 184
of the 188-lap Aaron's 499, rookie Brian Vickers and Casey Mears
collided, sending Vickers sliding and bringing out the 11th
caution flag of the race.
Under NASCAR's rule change from
last fall, freezing the field when the yellow comes out rather
than letting the competitors race to the flagstand, Gordon got his
first Nextel Cup victory of the season, third on Talladega's
2.66-mile oval and the 65th of his NASCAR career.
