Davis Cup 2008

2008 Davis Cup Schedule:
1st Round: USA at Austria (February 8, 2008 – February 10, 2008)
Official name: Davis Cup
Location: Vienna, Austria

Davis CupThe first round of the 16-nation World Group will be held 8-10 February, with the quarterfinals taking place 11-13 April. The semifinals, and Play-off ties for the 2009 World Group, will be held 19-21 September, and the 2008 Final on 21-23 November.

The Davis Cup is primarily a knockout tournament where each participating country is assigned to a certain group based on geography. Teams strive to reach the top 16 of the tournament, known as the World Group.

The rest of the teams belong to regional groups, and play to win and advance to higher group (ultimately the World Group) and risk being relegated to a lower group. The structure of the Davis Cup is in this way somewhat similar to many European soccer leagues, with relegation and promotion. But in the Davis Cup, all the excitement takes place over only four weekends a year.

The Davis Cup tennis tournament pits the world’s best tennis players against each other, creating huge fan and media interest. To spice up the event even further, many viewers like to try their hand at Davis Cup betting by wagering on the outcome of the individual rubbers and ties, as well as on which nation will win the coveted Cup itself.

The United States will face Austria in the opening round of the 2008 Davis Cup.

Davis Cup Structure

Sign Up Click HereRun by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Davis Cup tennis tournament is based on a knockout format.

The only exception is matches played by the lower two regional groups, which play a round robin competition.

The original format, devised by Davis, is still in force today. Competition always takes place over three days, with two singles matches on day 1, a doubles match on day 2 and two more singles matches on day 3. This is known as a “tie”. Each match within a tie is known as a “rubber”.

The competition is broken up into the elite World Group of 16 nations
3 regional zones - Europe/Africa, America and Asia/Oceania
4 groups for each regional zone
Teams are seeded and then relegated to the different groups by the ITF according to their ITF ranking.

Russia, Argentina, and Croatia currently top the ITF rankings.

Davis Cup 2008 Results

Argentina captain Alberto Mancini has reiterated his aim to claim the Davis Cup after a comprehensive 4-1 World Group triumph against Great Britain over the weekend.

The South Americans will be at home again in the quarter-finals against Sweden, who defeated Israel 3-2. Mancini was missing the likes of Guillermo Canas, Juan Monaco and Juan Martin Del Potro at Parque Roca through injury, so will have a formidable squad at his disposal for the last-eight tie from April 11-13. Argentina clinched a 5-0 whitewash over the Swedes two years ago in Buenos Aires and Mancini is hoping for more of the same.
