The PGA TOUR tournament in La Quinta, Calif. has a new name, a new format, a new trophy, and most important, an innovative new focus on health and well-being. The Humana Challenge, formerly known as The Bob Hope Classic will be held January 16 - 22, 2013 in La Quinta and will, as usual, be hosted by golf legend Arnold Palmer.

The annual Humana Challenge is a star-studded pro-am on the PGA Tour and is part of the FedEx Cup. It is the third event on the PGA calendar. The tournament will "challenge" participating TOUR pros, amateur golfers, celebrities, volunteers, and sponsor guests. Play will begin Thursday, with the first three rounds played in a pro-am format.

Pro-Am play for first 54 holes. Each of the 156 pros will play with a different amateur partner each day on different courses for three days. On Sunday, the low 70 professionals and ties will play the final round of the 72-hole PGA TOUR tournament at the Palmer Private at PGA WEST.

Humana Challenge Golf Tournament Format

The field size for the event will be 144 professionals, an increase of 16 professional spots from the previous format, and 144 amateurs. Besides the name change and new strategic direction, the tournament also will feature several changes to the professional and amateur format. The changes include:

  • A four-day tournament, beginning Thursday of tournament week, with the first three rounds played in a pro-am format.
  • The pro-am teams will consist of one professional and one amateur playing in groups of four.
  • For each day of the three round pro-am competition, the professional will have a different amateur partner. Amateurs will compete in daily competitions as well as an overall, three day competition
  • Round 4 will be professionals only with a normal 70 + ties cut.

What is known now as the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course, California will be the next golf event on the US PGA Tour calendar after the Humana Challenge.

2013 Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation Results

Starting the final day 6 strokes behind the leader, Brian Gay finished PGA West’s Arnold Palmer Private Course with a respectable 63 on Sunday, and it still took a playoff to win the 2013 Humana Challenge.

The first 13 holes were owned by Gay with 9 birdies and his closing five holes were all pars which helped his score just enough to get him in a PGA Tour Playoff. Charles Howell III and Sweden’s David Lingmerth tied Gay with a 25-under par 263 for the tournament. Gay’s blade did not disappoint on the greens as he went birdie-birdie in the playoff to finish off his 2 opponents one at a time.

This was Gay’s fourth PGA Tour victory, but his first win since the 2009 FedEx St. Jude Classic which explains his state of shock at the end..

    2011 Bob Hope Classic Results

Bob Hope Classic Winner 2001Jhonattan Vegas, a rookie on tour, surprised the golf world by winning the 2011 Bob Hope Classic in just his fifth PGA start. Vegas is the first PGA TOUR member from Venezuela and the first rookie to win in the 52 year history of the Bob Hope Classic.

Now joining Arnold Palmer (1960) and Charley Hoffman (2007) in the record books, Vegas won the Bob Hope Classic in his first start.

    2010 Bob Hope Classic Results

2010 Bob Hope Classic Winner Bill Haas followed his father's advice to be patient through six long days at the Bob Hope Classic until his final hole, when a highly impatient shot clinched his first PGA Tour victory.

Haas made a short birdie putt after an aggressive approach shot on the 18th hole to win the Hope Classic on Monday, beating Matt Kuchar, Tim Clark and Bubba Watson by one stroke with an 8-under 64.

"I'd been wanting to win from the first tournament I played, but it's a process, and there's a lot to it," said Haas, a rookie in 2006. "It's special, but I don't know if it's a monkey off my back. I know how hard it was to win, and I'm grateful."
