The O2 Arena in London, England

Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson has already been set for the O2 Arena, making it the third time the UFC has had a show there.

The middleweight winner of the first season of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” has signed a bout agreement to face Joe Stevenson at UFC 95 on Feb. 21 at the O2 Arena in London. This will be Diego Sanchez true test in his first fight at 155 pounds.

Sanchez, 26, announced his intentions to drop down to the lightweight division in December and will enter his first fight of 2009 on a two-fight win streak. Sanchez (19-2) submitted David Bielkheden at UFC 82 last March and stopped gritty American Top Team standout Luigi Fioravanti with strikes at “The Ultimate Fighter 7” Finale in June.

Sanchez’s only two career losses have come in the welterweight ranks to Josh Koscheck at UFC 69 in April 2007 and Jon Fitch via split decision at UFC 76 in September 2007, shortly after he left lifelong trainer Greg Jackson in Albuquerque, N. M. Sanchez now trains under Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Saulo Ribeiro and Rob Garcia in San Diego.

Stevenson (29-9), who won TUF’s second season at welterweight, has dropped two of his last three bouts. The former King of the Cage and Gladiator Challenge champion succumbed to a second-round rear-naked choke at the hands of lightweight champion B.J. Penn at UFC 80 last January in Newcastle, England, and was submitted with the same maneuver byKenny Florian at UFC 91 in November. The 26-year-old ground fighter has gone 6-3 in the Octagon.

In the welterweight division, Rory Markham takes on UK native Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy in a battle of two of the most promising talents in the division. Markham (16-4), a member of Team Miletich in Bettendorf, IA, made his UFC debut at Ultimate Fight Night, winning by knockout in the first round over Brodie Farber. In his last twenty professional bouts, has never had a fight go to decision. Now he will face a tuff test, when he meets up with Hardy (20-6, 1 NC), who showed great resiliency in winning his UFC debut against Akihiro Gono in October at UFC 89. Hardy won that slugfest via split decision, and the Nottingham, England native has never been stopped in a fight.

On the undercard, Josh Koscheck will look to spoil the UFC debut of newcomer Paulo Thiago in welterweight action, and submission specialist Demian Maia will welcome Chael Sonnen back to the UFC’s middleweight division in Sonnen’s first bout since coming over from the WEC.

Sonnen is coming off of an easy and rather impressive victory over Paulo Filho. His move from the WEC to the UFC was necessitated by the decision to drop the WEC middleweight and light heavyweight divisions in order to focus on the lower weight classes. Maia is coming off of consecutive victories over Ed Herman, Jason MacDonald, and Nate Quarry. He is a submission dynamo.

UFC 95 will air on Spike in the United States as opposed to on pay-per-view.

The UFC will feature two European shows in the first two months of 2009 and will not have a major American show outside Las Vegas until UFC 96, tentatively scheduled for March 7, 2009 in Columbus.
