UFC 109: Relentless
Date: Feb 06, 2010
Location: Las Vegas
Venue: Mandalay Bay Events Center
Broadcast: Pay-per-view
After scoring a close and controversial unanimous decision victory over Brandon Vera at UFC 105 in Manchester, former 5-time UFC champion Randy Couture has reportedly agreed to his next fight. Now, the 46-year-old Couture is expected to face 44-year-old Mark Coleman in the night’s co-main event at UFC 109.
This fight will pit two of the most outstanding MMA wrestlers against one another. Coleman will likely see the fight as a chance to reaffirm himself as one of the legends of the sport. Couture will likely enjoy the challenge of taking on a man with a similar background.
In 1998, Randy “The Natural” Couture and Mark “The Hammer” Coleman, were scheduled to meet in a relatively new proving ground called the Ultimate Fighting Championship. That mixed martial arts bout at UFC 17 never happened due to injury, but on Saturday, February 6th, nearly 12 years and six UFC championships later, Couture and Coleman finally square off.
Couture is the only fighter to have held titles in both the UFC’s light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2006. He is also a two-time Div. I National Championships team member and a two-time NCAA Div. I runner-up for Oklahoma State University.
Coleman recently defeated Stephan Bonnar at UFC 100 back in July. He was set to face Tito Ortiz at UFC 106 before a knee injury necessitated his removal from the bout. That allowed Forrest Griffin to step in to the spot.
Coleman, who was inducted by the UFC in 2008, was Pride Fighting Championships’ first grand prix tournament champion in 2000 and placed seventh in freestyle wrestling at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Coleman was an NCAA Div. I champion his senior year at Ohio State University.

Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen
A bout between middleweight contenders Nate Marquardt (29-8-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) and Chael Sonnen (24-10-1 MMA, 3-3 UFC) at UFC 109 Relentless.
Since losing to Anderson Silva in his first title shot in 2007, Marquardt has posted a 4-1 record, though the mid-2008 loss to Thales Leites was a controversial split decision prompted by two questionable point deductions. The other victories have all come via stoppage over Jeremy Horn, Martin Kampmann, Wilson Gouveia and, most recently, Demian Maia via 21-second knockout. The former King of Pancrase is now 10-2 over the past five years.
Sonnen, meanwhile, rejoined the UFC earlier this year following stints with the WEC and BodogFIGHT. Although just 1-2 in that first UFC run, he's now 2-1 with back-to-back decision victories following a submission loss to Demian Maia back in February. After topping Dan Miller and longtime contender Yushin Okami in his two most recent bouts, Sonnen also is inching closer to title contention.
Other fights to be on the main card include Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Brandon Vera and Frank Trigg vs. Matt Serra.
