Fiesta Bowl History

The Fiesta Bowl is an annual college football game held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. It is one of four bowls that take turns hosting the national championship game of college football. Since 1982 the game has typically been played on New Year's Day. The inaugural Fiesta Bowl was held on December 27, 1971, with Arizona State defeating Florida State 45-38. In 1987 the bowl pitted two undefeated teams—Penn State and Miami (Florida)—in a game that was the most watched in college football history. Penn State won 14-10 and claimed the national title. The Fiesta Bowl again hosted national champion-defining games in 1989 and 1996, and in 1999 it was the site of the first officially designated national championship game, with Tennessee defeating Florida State 23-16.

Fiesta Bowl's annual host , Sun Devil Stadium is located on the campus of Arizona State University in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe. It is home to the Arizona State Sun Devils college football team and the NFL's Arizona Cardinals. Built in 1958, the stadium now seats 73,379. In addition to hosting the Fiesta Bowl every year it was the site of Super Bowl XXX in 1996.

In 2000 the Fiesta Bowl became part of the Bowl Championship Series, and every four years (most recently in 2003) is the designee for the national championship game. In January 2007, the Fiesta Bowl hosted the BCS title game, the game was moved to the Arizona Cardinals' new stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
