The Sugar Bowl hosted the NCAA National Championship last year, one that didn't feature the No. 1 team in America, thanks to the BCS. LSU kept Oklahoma's offense at bay with a dominating defense and an ability to overcome their mistakes for a 21-14 victory and a share of the National Championship with USC.

Played in New Orleans, LSU has taken advantage of home field advantage before last year. In 2002, they blew out the Fighting Illini with a 47-34 victory in the Louisiana Superdome. Blowouts are common in the Sugar Bowl. The 2004 National Championship was the first game to be decided by a score or less since 1995.

The Sugar Bowl was born during the Great Depression, when New Orleans decided to raise money to host a prominent football game. In 1935, Temple jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but Temple came back to win 20-14. Since then, the Sugar Bowl has taken place in every single year, even commencing through the War Years.
